Chapter 722 I Feel Uneasy
Living in the same building, Mary and Matthew were bound to run into each other.
As they stepped into the elevator, Mary pressed the button for her floor and then retreated to a corner. Matthew's tall, imposing figure filled the small space, creating an air of tension. His strikingly handsome face was devoid of any extra expression as he looked at her through the mirrored elevator walls.
"Want to come over for dinner?" he asked.
Mary replied, "No."
She wasn't particularly hungry and hadn't planned on having dinner.
Matthew persisted, "Are you sure? You should try my cooking and give me some tips. That way, when we eventually part ways, I won't starve to death."
Mary was speechless.
She glanced up at him and said, "Even if you can't cook, you won't starve."
Matthew's net worth had skyrocketed, making him the youngest CEO in Lindwood City. There was nothing he couldn't get if he wanted it.
If he wanted something to eat, he could just put the word out, and people would line up to bring it to him.
Matthew turned to face her, his dark, narrow eyes fixed on her. "But I won't eat well, I won't be warm, and I won't be comfortable."
Mary's breath caught, and she avoided his gaze.
At that moment, the elevator doors opened. She glanced at the floor indicator and said, "This is your stop."
He lived in the apartment below hers.
Matthew took a step closer, narrowing the distance between them. "Mary, are you not going to reconsider?"
"No," she replied, her tone icy.
"Alright," Matthew conceded with a sigh, then turned and stepped out.
The elevator doors slowly closed, cutting off their view of each other.
Mary looked away, feeling the walls around her heart start to crumble, giving her a sense of unease.
She didn't want to relive the past; she just wanted to live her life in peace.
With her current project completed, she planned to resign from her job with Maria the next day.
She unlocked her apartment door with her fingerprint, but Shirley was nowhere to be seen.
Just then, her phone rang. It was a call from Shirley.
"Mary, I've moved out," Shirley said.
Mary asked, puzzled, "Why did you suddenly move out?"
Shirley chuckled, "I'm planning to stay here for a long time. I can't just freeload forever. I found a new job to continue my career."
Mary replied, "You didn't have to move out for that."
Shirley cleared her throat, "I'm in a relationship now. Living with you would make you the third wheel."
Mary was speechless.
Shirley continued, "I've already found a job. Let's go out for dinner to celebrate. My treat."
Mary leaned lazily on the couch. "I'm not very hungry."
"Come on, let's celebrate," Shirley coaxed.
Mary thought for a moment and asked, "Where are we going?"
Shirley said, "There's a great place I found. My treat today. I'm telling you, if you miss this, there won't be another chance."
Mary's lips twitched. "Fine, send me the address."
"Got it!"
Mary changed her clothes, grabbed her car keys, and left.
By the time she arrived at the restaurant, the sky had darkened, and the warm lights illuminated the entire place, creating a cozy atmosphere.
"Mary, over here," Shirley called, waving.
Mary walked over to her. Their table was in a more secluded area, and once the door was closed, it felt quite private.
Shirley handed her the menu, "Go ahead, order whatever you like."
