Chapter 453 The Only One You Can Rely on Is Me
Matthew shot back a chilly "Okay."
He said it, but didn't head upstairs. Instead, he pulled out his phone to call Mary.
He knew she'd feel better if she left, but she should've at least told him. Did she not care at all, just leaving without a word?
He dialed her number, but it went straight to voicemail. Her phone was off.
Matthew frowned, thinking, 'Why's her phone off?'
Seeing Matthew still downstairs, the servant urged, "Mr. Matthew Montagu, Mr. Richard Montagu needs to see you about Mr. Samuel Montagu. Please hurry."
Matthew's eyes grew colder, and the servant felt the pressure, lowering their head even more.
Matthew put his phone away.
Thinking about Mary's icy attitude, a hint of mockery flashed in his eyes.
Maybe she turned off her phone on purpose to avoid him!
Irritated, Matthew walked toward the study with a frosty expression.
He didn't knock, just walked in, finding Richard in a chair with a maid kneeling in front of him. The desk blocked them partly, but it was clear what was happening.
Richard's face darkened. "You come in without knocking? Got any manners?"
Matthew stood at the door, staring coldly. "You know best if I have manners."
Richard looked grim, embarrassed to be caught by his son. He dismissed the maid and, after composing himself, asked, "How's the investigation on Samuel?"
Matthew replied, "No news."
Richard's gaze turned sinister. "No news, or you didn't try? Matthew, do you want Samuel gone? He treated you well, but you don't want him back?"
Matthew stayed at the doorway, disgusted.
His expression was ice-cold. "You're deluding yourself. Samuel was burned so badly. You still think he's alive? Maybe living in luxury has rotted your brain?"
He paused, then laughed mockingly. "Dad, take care of your health. Overindulgence is harmful."
"How dare you!" Richard's face darkened more. He grabbed a bottle and threw it at Matthew.
Matthew dodged easily and spoke coldly, "Find him yourself or don't talk to me about it. I'm the only one you can rely on in this family."
With that, he turned and left.
"Bastard!" Richard's face turned pale with anger. He wanted another son, but unfortunately, Linda hadn't gotten pregnant despite being married to him for many years. Even the mistresses he found outside had not conceived. He had even checked his fertility—no issues!
It seemed he was stuck with one unfilial son, Matthew!
Just then, Linda walked in.
Richard asked, "How's Mary?"
Linda replied, "She's behaving, Richard. If Matthew finds out, he might cause trouble."
Richard snorted, "Even if he finds out, he won't be lenient. He doesn't care about me, but Victoria is his bottom line. If he knows Mary hurt Victoria, he won't let her off!"
Linda looked troubled. "Richard, what exactly do you want to do?"
