Chapter 378 She Lost

Mary still felt uneasy.

She paused, glanced at Mark, and asked, "What if one day you find out Gerald's innocent? Will you regret today's decision?"

Mark stayed silent.

The room felt heavy.

Mary let out a soft sigh and said, "Mark, let me take you to the station."

Mark got up without a word, grabbed his stuff, and walked out.

His message was clear. He was done with Gerald.

Mary couldn't quite put her feelings into words. She was confused.

Right now, she even felt a bit unsure about family ties.

After seeing Mark off, her phone rang. She pulled it out and saw it was Matthew calling.

Mary pursed her lips and answered, "Hello?"

Matthew's deep, magnetic voice came through, sounding a bit joyful. "Mary, join me for dinner tonight at the Montagu Mansion."

He sounded so sure she'd say yes.

And of course, she would.

Because she had lost.

Since she lost, she had to keep her promise.

No more talk of divorce; she'd stay his wife.

Mary stood outside the station, looking up at the sky. She didn't know when it had turned gloomy, just like her mood.

"Okay," she replied softly and hung up.

She didn't take a cab but wandered aimlessly down the road.

Her eyes were downcast, her thoughts a mess.

It seemed like things had ended just like that.

But was Gerald's situation really as it seemed?

Why wouldn't Matthew let her see Gerald?

What puzzled her most was why those photos of Gerald, beaten and bloodied, showed up on Mark's phone.

If the Montagu family didn't plan to let Gerald go, why inform Mark?

What was their game?

But since Mark wasn't going to dig deeper, she, as an outsider, couldn't say much about his decision.

Mary sighed and got into a car, heading off.

In the evening, Mary arrived at the Montagu Mansion.

The servants knew she was coming and opened the door for her, greeting, "Good evening, Mrs. Montagu."

Mary felt a sense of unfamiliarity with that title.

Even though she and Matthew had never divorced.

It felt like that title had never truly belonged to her; she still felt like the old Mary.

But starting today, things would be different.

She had to embrace a life completely different from before.

She had to accept this identity, even get used to it.

Mary responded softly, walked through the corridor, and entered the mansion.

The butler saw her and approached with a smile. "Mrs. Montagu, please wait a moment. Mr. Montagu will be back soon."

"Okay." Mary nodded and sat down on the couch.

She had been here twice before and knew the place's grandeur. Even now, she still felt out of place.

She didn't belong here.

Mary lowered her eyes, staying very quiet.

The servants quietly brought over some desserts and juice and then left.

About half an hour later, there was some noise at the door.

Mary instinctively turned her head and saw Matthew, dressed in a black suit, tall and imposing, walking in.

As he walked, he loosened his tie, came up to her, grabbed the back of her neck, and kissed her directly.
