Chapter 295 Taking Over the Orphanage

"I'm good."

Mary's voice was muffled and kinda raspy.

David noticed and asked, "You sound a bit off. Everything cool?"

Mary closed her eyes, "I'm fine, really. Don't sweat it. Worry about yourself. Barbara's been taken away, and she probably ain't coming back. The orphanage might shut down."

David was quiet for a sec, then said, "I've decided to take over the orphanage."

Mary's eyes flew open. "What did you just say?"

David explained, "I never planned to leave Lindenville. I grew up in that orphanage and always wanted to pay back Ms. Inome. But after what she did, I can't forgive her. Now that she's gone, the kids there are innocent. So, after thinking it over, I've decided to take over."

Mary pressed her lips together, feeling all sorts of emotions.

After a bit, she said, "If that's your decision, go for it."

"Alright." David replied, then added, "Mary, I'm sorry for everything that went down. If you ever need anything from me, just holler. I'd go to hell and back for you."

Mary chuckled, "If you go to hell, who's gonna look after those kids?"

David laughed.

But they both knew a gap had formed between them, and nothing David did could fix it.

David said, "Well. Good night, get some rest."

"Okay, bye."

He hung up.

Mary turned over and tried to sleep.

She was really wiped out.

But it felt like she hadn't slept long before she was woken up again.

She opened her eyes, annoyed. "What are you doing?"

She saw Matthew standing by the bed, frowning at her. "You have a fever. Take this medicine."

He was holding some pills and a glass of water.

Mary was stunned and touched her forehead, which was indeed burning hot.

She took the pills and the water, swallowed them, and lay back down.

Matthew said, "Don't sleep yet. Eat something first, then you can crash."

Mary looked at him, her eyes filled with exhaustion and softness. "I'm super tired. Let me sleep a bit."

Matthew said, "If you don't get up, do you want me to feed you?"

Mary was silent.

The thought of that made her shiver, and she quickly said, "No need, I'm getting up."

Matthew watched her get out of bed before turning and leaving the room.

Mary, in her nightgown with her long hair down, looked completely drained.

After a while, the hotel staff brought dinner.

Mary sat at the table and started eating, but she noticed Matthew's gaze. She looked at him suspiciously. "What's your deal?"

Matthew looked away and said indifferently, "Nothing."

Mary felt confused. She ate a bit and then put down her utensils. "I'm done."

Matthew pushed a bowl of soup in front of her and said, "Drink this, or no sleep for you."

Mary frowned, her whole body showing resistance.

But Matthew's words were pretty intimidating. She picked up the spoon and started drinking.

The whole time, Matthew's eyes were glued to her, his gaze so intense it made her uncomfortable.

She sighed and said, "I'm still sick. Can you stop staring at me like that?"

Matthew sneered, "Aren't you the one trying to seduce me?"
