Chapter 823 I Love You, But I Cannot Reconcile with the Past

Was she wavering?

Was she retreating?

Was she hesitating?

It sure seemed like it.

When this realization hit her, Mary knew her long-standing determination had turned into a joke.

Looking back, there were times Matthew hurt her, but there were also times he showed he cared. Why had she been so adamant about the divorce?

Maybe it was the constant mistrust, the stark differences. They had been deeply in love once, but when he regained his memory and identity, he became someone else.

His entanglements with other women, his need to repay kindness, yet he overlooked her kindness to him.

Those disappointments eventually turned into despair. She didn't want to hold on anymore, so she wanted a divorce.

Just like Mary's heart, once filled with love for Matthew, but gradually drained through repeated wear and tear, turning into a dry riverbed, cracked and painful every time she thought about it.

She simply didn't want to continue feeling this pain.

Her thoughts were chaotic, but she understood the logic behind them. Divorce was just a way to start anew, to live a better life.

For both of them, it was a good thing.

So, wavering was real, worry was real, and wanting a divorce was also real.

"Mary."

Suddenly, Matthew's deep, magnetic voice reached her ears.

"What?"

Mary turned her head and met his intense gaze.

Matthew stared at her, his Adam's apple bobbing, and after a moment, he asked, "You're really worried about me, aren't you?"

"Yeah."

This time, Mary didn't deny it or avoid it. She openly admitted it.

His pupils contracted slightly.

Mary then said calmly, "You once said that I loved you, and it's impossible to just stop loving you. I didn't agree before, but now I suddenly do. I do worry about you, and sometimes I waver deeply. But that doesn't change my mind."

Her clear eyes gazed at Matthew's handsome face, her voice soft, but her words were resolute.

"Matthew, I can't reconcile with the past, even if I love you."

The hope that had risen in Matthew's eyes was suddenly extinguished.

How cruel.

Mary clearly told him she still loved him.

But she also decisively rejected him. They wouldn't be together.

The past wounds had left deep scars on her heart, so she said she couldn't reconcile.

"Should I be happy or sad?" Matthew stared at her, finally speaking after a long pause.

Mary didn't respond. What emotions he felt were his own business, seemingly unrelated to her.

She suddenly felt relieved.

Her heart was no longer conflicted.

She was more hopeful for the future.

Matthew let out a low laugh and said, "Mary, you know how to pierce someone. Can I say I'm now riddled with wounds?"

Mary smiled, "But you're still talking to me."

Matthew fell silent.

The car was enveloped in quietness, and neither of them spoke much for the rest of the journey.

Back at Maple Grove Manor.

Mary took a shower first, then sat at her vanity to do her skincare routine.

At that moment, her phone rang. She glanced at it; it was a call from Matthew.

It was likely about the person who had been captured.

She answered and put it on speaker.

Matthew's deep, pleasant voice came through, "The investigation is complete. It was just an ordinary person, no background, no one behind them, simply wanting to hurt me out of spite."
