Chapter 766 Thirty-Day Cooling-Off Period for Divorce

Mary glanced at him, her mind racing.

Matthew was surprisingly laid-back.

Matthew caught her gaze, and a faint smile played on his lips. "Having second thoughts? We can bail if you want."

Mary quickly looked away.

She couldn't afford to show him any kindness; he'd just exploit it.

Without the property dispute, the paperwork was a breeze.

But they couldn't get the divorce certificate today; there was a mandatory thirty-day cooling-off period.

Mary frowned.

If the next thirty days went smoothly, that would be fine. But if something happened...

"Can't we just get it done now?"

The clerk replied, "We have to follow the regulations."

They left the courthouse.

The winter sun shone down, its warmth cutting through the cold.

Matthew noticed the regret on Mary's face, his eyes darkening slightly. "What are you regretting? I'll be back in thirty days."

He stepped closer. "But before that, you need to come with me somewhere."

Mary looked at him. "Where?"

Matthew said, "I can't tell you yet. I'll let you know in a couple of days."

Mary frowned.

What was he up to? So secretive.

Her instincts told her it wasn't anything good. She wanted to refuse, but knowing Matthew could change his mind at any moment, she held back.

She'd wait and see what he was planning.

Just then, her phone rang. She took it out and saw it was Maria calling.

"Ms. Diaz," Mary answered, her tone gentle.

Maria asked, "Are you done with your business?"

Mary replied, "Almost. I can go back to work today."

Maria said, "Good. The client you signed with is asking for the design drafts. If you have a rough draft, send it over for them to review."

"Okay, I'll head back now."

Mary hung up the phone.

"Where to? I'll drive you," Matthew offered.

Mary thought for a moment and nodded. "To the office."

Matthew's eyes flickered, but he didn't ask anything further. They got into the car together.

When the car stopped in front of the building, Matthew watched Mary go inside before dialing Maria's number.

"Matthew, what do you need now?" Maria's voice was lazy.

Matthew asked, "She's not quitting?"

Maria knew he was talking about Mary.

"She will, but she took on a project recently. I think once she finishes it, she'll submit her resignation. Then I won't have any reason to keep her. Matthew, you need to step up, stabilize the relationship, use your charm, and make her stay!"

Matthew's tone was cold. "You seem too idle lately. There's a shortage of staff abroad. Maybe you should go."

"No, please!" Maria wailed. "I was just giving you a suggestion. You don't have to take it. I'm still very useful here. For example, I've kept Sean occupied. He hasn't had time to bother Mary. Matthew, doesn't that count as solving a big problem for you?"

Matthew's stern expression softened slightly. "Fine, your merits cancel out your faults. No bonus."

With that, he hung up.

Maria was speechless.
