Chapter 812 Resignation as President of the Montagu Group
Mary pressed her lips together, reluctant to admit it but unable to deny it—her heart was wavering for Matthew.
Recent events flashed through her mind, and she lowered her gaze, her eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions.
How could she not waver?
He had changed significantly. He had become much gentler, and he now respected her thoughts and opinions.
He was slowly becoming the Matthew she had once loved.
She had no resistance against Matthew.
Mary closed her eyes briefly, trying to pull herself out of those emotions, without offering much explanation.
"Let's get back to work."
She dropped the words and refocused her attention on the computer.
---
The Montagu Group's conference room.
The atmosphere was heavy.
Matthew sat at the head of the table, dressed in a silver-gray suit, without a tie, and with the top two buttons of his shirt undone. One hand rested on the table, a pen twirling between his long, elegant fingers. His handsome, sharp face was expressionless.
All the shareholders were present.
One side of the table was silent, their faces showing little emotion.
On the other side, several shareholders looked displeased.
"Matthew, we know you're capable, and we've seen your excellent business acumen and strategies. But causing such a scandal so soon after taking office—isn't that a bit much?"
"Exactly. The Montagu Group is huge, but it can't withstand any turmoil. You're the president, the leader. If something happens to you, it affects the entire Montagu Group. Just now, the stock price has already dropped. In my opinion, you should hold a press conference, publicly apologize, and then announce your resignation as president. We can temporarily appoint someone to take your place. Once this storm passes, you can come back."
As soon as the words were spoken, the atmosphere in the conference room grew even more tense, an invisible chill spreading through the air.
"Is that so?" Matthew looked at the speaking shareholder. "Finnegan, does that mean you already have a suitable candidate in mind?"
Finnegan leaned back in his chair. He was about the same age as Richard and didn't take Matthew, this young upstart, seriously at all.
With a faint smile, he said, "When your father was in charge, the Montagu Group was orderly and well-managed. Now, you've caused such a scandal, bringing a negative impact to the group. I'm not denying your abilities, but you're still young and not steady enough in the face of problems. In my opinion, it would be better to let Linda temporarily take your place. She's your father's legal wife and holds shares in the group. It's just a temporary arrangement; no one would object."
Finnegan then looked at the others. "What do you all think?"
Immediately, someone on the other side spoke up, "Linda has never handled group affairs. Suddenly making her the temporary president might not be convincing."
Finnegan chuckled, "It's just a title. We still have us to handle things, don't we? We have no choice; when young people make mistakes, we old folks have to clean up the mess."
His words were harsh, almost like pointing a finger at Matthew and scolding him.
"Ridiculous!" Someone on the other side slammed the table, angrily saying, "It's obvious that someone deliberately released this to create a scandal for the Montagu Group. Instead of finding out the truth, you're here blaming Mr. Montagu and trying to remove him from his position. What are your true intentions?"
