Chapter 472 Something's Wrong with Victoria
Matthew finished talking but didn't hang up. Mary could hear him opening the car door and getting out, followed by quick footsteps.
She clutched her phone tightly and pressed the close door button again.
This time, the elevator doors finally shut.
Her anxiety eased a bit.
"The doors are closed," Mary said, realizing her legs felt like jelly.
Matthew replied, "Stay put until you reach the first floor."
"Got it," Mary said, but she didn't hang up either.
Luckily, the elevator reached the first floor quickly, and the building was empty since no one was working late.
When the doors opened, Mary saw Matthew waiting at the entrance. She dashed out!
Matthew pulled her into a hug and softly said, "It's okay, I'll figure this out."
Wrapped in his cool scent, Mary finally relaxed, but then a wave of fear hit her hard!
Her nose tingled, and tears welled up, but she held them back.
Matthew held her close and led her out of the building.
Once in the car, the warmth started to thaw her cold body.
Matthew held her hand and asked, "Did you see anyone?"
Mary shook her head, "No."
Then she asked, "What do you mean?"
Matthew's voice was serious, "If the elevator doors wouldn't close, it was either a malfunction or someone outside pressing the open button."
He looked at her closely, "In your case, it was definitely the latter."
Mary felt a chill, "Who would do that?"
And why?
Targeting her?
Mary suddenly thought of Roy and quickly asked, "Have you found Roy?"
Matthew said, "No, he's hiding well and hasn't shown up at all."
Mary said, "His absence is the biggest threat. He always says I ruined him, but I don't even remember who he is."
Matthew said, "If you don't remember, don't stress about it now."
He held her close, trying to calm her down.
Mary closed her eyes and suddenly didn't want to struggle anymore, staying in his embrace.
After all, she couldn't resist his presence and still needed it.
A hint of bitterness flashed in Mary's eyes.
As they were about to reach home, Matthew got a call from Montagu Manor.
His brows furrowed, but he answered.
Linda's gentle voice came through, "Matthew, are you and Mary asleep? If not, could you come over? Your grandmother's condition doesn't seem right."
Matthew's expression turned serious immediately.
"I'll be right there!"
He hung up and told the driver to head to Montagu Manor.
Mary asked, "What's wrong?"
Matthew said, "Not sure."
Until he saw Victoria, he couldn't be certain.
Mary sensed his tension, bit her lip, and felt a growing sense of dread.
The car quickly arrived at Montagu Manor.
They walked into the living room and saw Victoria in a wheelchair, with Richard and Linda on the sofa, the atmosphere heavy.
Mary noticed Victoria's eyes were much clearer, no longer cloudy.
"Grandma," Matthew walked over and called to her.
"Matthew," Victoria looked at him and smiled, then held his hand, "Why didn't you bring Laura with you?"
