Chapter 799 It's Not Me Begging You
Matthew glanced at the caregiver. "Make sure she's okay, alright? Hit me up if anything happens, and leave Mary out of it."
The caregiver nodded. "Got it."
As Matthew stepped out, he spotted Mary already at the door, her slender figure wrapped in a scarf like she was trying to fend off the cold. She reached for the car door and climbed in.
She cranked up the heater first, waiting for the car to warm up before starting the engine.
Just then, there was a tap on the passenger side window.
Mary turned to see Matthew standing there, looking as handsome as ever, his eyes intense.
She unlocked the car door.
Matthew opened it and slid in.
"What's going on?" she asked.
"Why did Grandma want to see you?" Matthew asked.
Mary shrugged. "Not much. She probably just wanted some company."
She couldn't find anyone else and had a vague impression of Mary.
Matthew said, "If she calls for you again, just ignore her."
He was worried Victoria might actually bully Mary.
After all, Victoria had done it before!
Mary nodded. "Are you done?"
"What?" Matthew looked at her, puzzled.
Mary said, "If you're done, you can get out of the car."
Matthew chuckled, a bit exasperated.
She really wouldn't give him even a hint of warmth!
Instead of getting out, he buckled his seatbelt and said, "I'm heading back to Maple Grove Manor too."
Mary shot him a sideways glance.
He sure was shameless about hitching a ride!
But she didn't dwell on it and drove back to Maple Grove Manor.
The drive was quiet, with a subtle tension hanging between them.
In the elevator, Mary couldn't help but ask, "You won't miss it in seven days, right?"
Matthew glanced at her. "You're the one who always misses it."
Mary frowned. "That was a special circumstance."
Matthew replied, "Let's hope you don't have any special circumstances then."
Mary was speechless.
Just then, her phone rang. Seeing it was Nora calling, she answered, "Hey, Nora."
Nora's gentle voice came through. "Mary, are you busy right now?"
"Not at all, what's up?" Mary asked, sensing a hint of caution in Nora's voice.
Nora whispered, "I think my family found out I'm at the hospital. Can you come over?"
Mary's brow furrowed. "Okay, don't worry. Stay in your room and don't go out. I'm on my way."
Nora agreed softly.
After hanging up, Mary immediately pressed the button for the first floor.
Matthew asked, "What's going on?"
Mary replied, "It's about the girl I accidentally hit before, her family."
Matthew said, "I'll go with you."
Mary shook her head. "No need, I can handle it myself."
But Matthew insisted, "The deadline's coming up. I don't want anything to delay it, and then you'll blame me."
Mary was speechless.
What an unassailable reason.
Still, she felt uneasy. Nora had mentioned her family was unreasonable, and if things got heated, she might not be able to handle it alone.
She looked at Matthew and said, "This is your idea, not me asking for your help."
