Chapter 280 I Won't Hold It against You for Leaving without Permission
Laura's face went stiff.
Matthew had warned her that if she kept pushing to stay, she'd just annoy him. He'd already told her the marriage promise was off.
Laura took a deep breath and said, "Alright, if you need anything, just call me."
"Okay," Matthew replied.
Laura and Michael left together.
Matthew got up and opened the guest room door.
The room was empty.
Mary was gone.
His face darkened as he pulled out his phone and called Mary.
"Hello?"
Mary's voice came through.
"Where did you go?" Matthew asked, his voice low.
Mary replied, "Didn't you have someone following me? Just ask them."
Matthew's tone grew colder, "I want you to tell me!"
Mary said, "Oh, well, I don't want to tell you."
"Mary!"
Matthew was fuming. "Did I say you could leave? Come back now!"
Mary laughed. "My legs, my choice. Why do I need your permission?"
A vein throbbed in Matthew's forehead. He tried to stay calm. "Mary, it's not safe out there. Come back now, and I won't hold it against you."
Mary chuckled and hung up.
Matthew was so angry he almost smashed his phone.
He thought, 'What went wrong? Why did she leave? Wait, Laura!'
Matthew texted Michael. Seeing Michael's reply, his face turned icy.
Mary saw Laura.
No wonder she left.
Matthew called Sam, "Keep an eye on her!"
Sam replied seriously, "Mr. Montagu, don't worry, I'll protect Ms. Smith with my life!"
Matthew hung up, sat on the sofa, and rubbed his temples, looking grim.
Mary had planned to leave Lindenville, but there were no cars available.
So she found a motel that didn't require driver's license, making it harder to track her.
The motel was in bad shape, but she'd seen worse growing up. This was nothing.
Lying on the bed, she stared at the ceiling, watching a spider weave its web.
Matthew and Laura's faces floated in her mind.
She touched her chest, feeling a faint pain.
She closed her eyes.
Memories of the past few days replayed in her mind.
Since he regained his memory, this was the first peaceful time they'd spent together.
She had been avoiding him, but fate brought them back together.
Mary felt like she had stolen these days; they were a treasure.
They had moments of conflict, sweetness, and thrilling experiences.
She thought these memories might stay with her for decades.
And that was good.
At least they had some happy memories.
The next day, Mary was woken up by a phone call. She groggily answered, "Hello?"
David's gentle voice came through, "Mary, are you free today? Want to come over for a meal?"
Mary was about to refuse but remembered her promise. "Sure, what time?"
David sounded cheerful. "How about noon? At the orphanage. Don't worry, Ms. Inome won't be there, so you'll feel more comfortable. Last time you didn't get a good look at the place."
