Chapter 225 Caught
The next day, Barbara felt great thinking about last night. They'd let Mary slip away before, but not this time. Peter had been obsessed with her.
Barbara was about to check on the kids when there was a knock at the door. "Who is it? Coming!"
She opened the door to find several police officers. Stunned, she asked, "What can I do for you?"
The lead officer showed his badge and said, "You're reported for child trafficking and illegal trade of women. You need to come with us."
Terrified, Barbara stammered, "No, I didn't do any of that. I'm the orphanage director!"
The officer replied, "We'll discuss this at the station."
Barbara was taken away.
Mary found out when David called her during breakfast at the hotel. Hearing his worried tone, she calmly said, "Do you know where I was last night?"
David was confused. "Where were you?"
Mary chuckled, "Barbara invited me to dinner at the Opulent Oasis Hotel and sold me to Peter."
David was shocked. "How is that possible? Is there a misunderstanding?"
Mary explained, "Five years ago, she sold me. I escaped by hitting Peter and running away. What did she tell you all after I ran?"
David was speechless. He remembered Barbara's bad temper but thought she was good for running the orphanage.
Thinking back to that time, Barbara returned furious, cursing that Mary was an ungrateful wretch who ran away without a word and without repaying her for raising her. They believed her.
They couldn't understand why Mary would run away after Barbara had raised her.
It turned out there was more to the story!
David, hoarse, asked, "Mary, were you okay last night?"
"I'm fine," Mary said calmly. "I didn't hold a grudge for five years because she raised me. But now, her debt is repaid. This time, she faces the consequences. If she's innocent, she'll be released."
David was silent.
Mary wiped her mouth with a napkin and said, "David, you should leave Lindenville and explore the world. You're young; staying here will hold you back."
David replied, "I understand. I'll think about it."
After hanging up, Mary planned to visit the police station. She wanted to ask Barbara about her biological parents. If Barbara refused, she'd leave.
At the police station, Peter entered the interrogation room where Barbara was held. Seeing him, Barbara pleaded, "Mr. James, get me out of here. I need to take care of the kids!"
Peter sneered, "You old hag, you wanna die? How dare you play me?"
Barbara turned pale. "Mr. James, what are you talking about? I brought Mary to you. Didn't you have a good time last night?"
