Chapter 57 She Asked for More Money

The dinner was held in a mansion estate.

The red carpet extended from inside the estate all the way to the gate, with cars constantly stopping at the end of the carpet and people dressed in glamorous attire stepping out.

Matthew's car soon came to a stop as well. Mary reached out to open the car door but was stopped.

"What's up?" she asked, looking at him in confusion.

Matthew, somewhat helpless, said, "Wait, you need to hold my arm. We can't let others see that we're not getting along."

"Do we have to?" Mary questioned.

"We're couples," Matthew replied.

"Okay, pay me more money then," Mary said bluntly.

"You're making a fortune out of this?" Matthew teased.

Mary chuckled, "You figure it out, don't you?"

Matthew gave her a deep look and said, "We'll settle it later."

Mary was about to say something more, but at that moment, the car door was opened, so she had to keep quiet for now.

She couldn't push it; if he got upset, it would be a dead end.

Matthew got out of the car first, extending his hand to her. Mary glanced at his palm, felt a sudden tug at her heart, and then placed her hand in his, which he held tightly.

After getting out, she naturally linked her arm with his.

A faint smile played on Matthew's lips as he led her into the estate.

This party was a business gala for the Chamber of Commerce in Emerald Isle City, attended by the business elite of the city. As a member of the Montagu family from Lindwood City, Matthew had been naturally invited while on a business trip here.

His return had caused quite a stir not only in Lindwood City but also in Emerald Isle City.

It was well known that there were three young masters in the Montagu family, but over a decade ago, a kidnapping case had shocked the whole Lindwood City. All three of them were kidnapped for ransom.

Despite the family's exhaustive efforts, the kidnappers' hideout remained elusive until it was found by police half a month later, but it was too late.

Two of them died, leaving Matthew the only survivor.

He became the sole heir of the Montagu family.

However, after being rescued, Matthew was in a daze. At a young age, he had seen numerous psychologists until his condition improved a year later.

But two years ago, he became a vegetative state in a car accident, and a year ago, he mysteriously disappeared from home until his recent return. People couldn't help but think that this Matthew Montagu had indeed experienced a turbulent fate, and his survival was nothing short of miraculous.

Inquisitive gazes fell on Matthew, but he seemed completely unaware. His handsome and sharp face wore a calm and indifferent expression, surrounded by a powerful and noble aura.

Mary, however, was puzzled. Why were they staring at Matthew?

What was on his face?

At that moment, a middle-aged man approached, engaging Matthew in conversation. Mary found it boring and didn't pay any attention.

Suddenly, Mary felt a pat on her hand and turned in confusion.

Matthew said to her, "There's a buffet over there. If you're hungry, grab something to eat. I'll come find you later."

"Okay." Mary nodded and immediately let go of his arm, walking away without a moment's hesitation.

A hint of helplessness flashed in Matthew's eyes, but he quickly engaged in conversation with others.

This was a business gala, and the attendees were naturally there to cooperate, find suitable partners, and exchange industry experiences. But Mary wasn't interested in any of that.
