Chapter 58 The Topic of Gossip

Mary's eyes lit up as she saw the food in front of her.

She quietly made her way to a nearby resting area with a few snacks.

There were already quite a few ladies over there, gossiping about what was in Emerald Isle City. Mary naturally wasn't paying attention since she didn't know much about the city.

"Hey, have you seen Matthew, the third of a young generation in the Montagu family from Lindwood City, who was in a vegetative state and then went missing for a year?"

"Yes, I know him. I heard that his girlfriend saved his life back then but ended up losing a leg of hers. Later, he lost his memory and was taken in by another woman. When that woman found out who he was, she refused to divorce him."

"Well, that's a young master from the Montagu family. As long as she holds onto Matthew, she'll become so wealthy. Who would want a divorce?"

"Isn't Matthew's girlfriend really pitiful? She lost her leg for rescuing Matthew, but in the end, she lost him too. In my opinion, that woman is really shameless in holding onto a man who doesn't love her."

Listening to the conversation, Mary realized she had become the topic of their gossip. With her expression froze, Mary stood up and walked over. "You're in Emerald Isle City. How did you hear about this incident?" she asked with apparent interest.

The women found Mary to look unfamiliar, but they were engrossed in their conversation and paid no attention to whether she was a stranger or not.

"This news spread in the business circles of Emerald Isle City not long ago. So did in Lindwood City, right?" one of them remarked.

Mary nodded, "Matthew's girlfriend is indeed quite pitiful, but is the woman who ended up with Matthew really that shameless? It seems like she didn't do anything wrong."

Upon hearing this, the woman glanced at Mary suspiciously and asked, "Who are you?"

Mary smiled slightly, "I'm the one who married Matthew."

As soon as she spoke, everyone fell silent. The music in the background seemed to fade away, and the room became so quiet that one could hear a pin drop.

Seeing the sudden hush, Mary asked in confusion, "Hmm? Why is everyone so quiet? I quite enjoy it. Please, continue."

The women glanced at each other, ignoring Mary directly, and left one by one.

Soon, Mary found herself alone.

She smirked. These people are such cowards!

She got up for more food. The banquet's cuisine was indeed delicious!

However, as she moved, a waiter accidentally spilled the tray of drinks he was carrying, splashing Mary's clothes.

"I'm so sorry!" The waiter apologized repeatedly, flustered.

Mary frowned, "It's okay."

But why was the waiter walking so close behind her on such a wide path?

"Your clothes are wet. Go upstairs and change before you catch a cold," a gentle voice said at that moment.

Mary looked up to see a well-dressed girl looking at her with concern.

The girl was Jessica Johnson, the daughter of the host of the business banquet.

Mary wiped her skirt with a tissue and said, "It's okay, thank you."

She had no spare clothes to change into.

Sensing Mary's predicament, Jessica said, "I think we're about the same size. If you don't mind, you can wear my clothes. As Matthew's wife, you'll have to go out with him later. If people see you like this, you'll both be subject to ridicule."
