Chapter 180 Are You Really Going to Marry Laura?
Herman said, "Offshore account, anonymous." After a pause, he added, "It's pretty obvious who's behind all of this. They won't stop until you're dead, will they?"
Matthew set the iPad aside and said, "Have someone follow Mary."
Herman frowned. "You're still protecting her after everything?"
Matthew looked at him thoughtfully. "Why do you think she's in this mess? Don't you know?"
Herman moved his lips and sighed. "Fine, but I I'm still not over the poisoning thing. I've always suspected she's working for that person."
Matthew stayed silent. Was Mary involved?
Memories of the past year flooded Matthew's mind. If she was involved, she had plenty of chances to harm him but didn't. Her eyes were so clear, her smile so pure. He didn't want to believe it, but after everything that had gone down, it was hard for him to trust anyone anymore.
Seeing Matthew's troubled expression, Herman asked, "Are you really going to marry Laura?"
"I'm not divorced yet," Matthew replied. As long as he was married, he and Mary would always be connected.
Herman remarked, "But divorce is inevitable for you two."
Matthew didn't respond but closed his eyes to rest.
In the restaurant, Robert ordered some dishes and then looked at Mary. "What do you want to eat?"
Mary, still preoccupied with Laura's kidnapping, hesitated. "I've already eaten, Robert. You go ahead."
As soon as she finished speaking, her stomach growled, and she fell awkwardly silent.
Robert chuckled and handed her the menu. "Come on. It's on you this time."
"Okay," Mary agreed. She ordered her food and handed the menu back to the waiter.
Playing with his water glass, Robert noticed her worry and asked, "This situation will be resolved soon. Why aren't you as happy as I expected?"
Mary forced a bitter smile. "Things are never truly resolved."
Just as the poisoning incident was about to be resolved, here popped the kidnapping.
Mary seriously wondered if she had offended the Almighty this year; otherwise, why was it so rough?
Robert suggested, "Don't dwell on it. Live for now. The future is always unknown and often scary. Just chill in the moment, and indulge yourself. Isn't that nice?"
Mary nodded, "Yes, you're right." But she wasn't happy in the present moment.
At that moment, her phone rang. It was Alvin. Mary took a deep breath and answered, "Hello?"
Alvin's tone was impatient. He snapped, "Mary, do you think the company is yours? Popping in and out whenever you feel like it? Come back here ASAP, or don't bother showing up again!"
Mary responded coldly, "Firing an employee without cause requires compensation. I can file for labor arbitration."
"You!" Alvin's voice changed. "You've gone too far. You dipped without filling out a leave form. I'm ratting you out to Mr. Montagu for sure!"
Alvin angrily hung up and immediately called Michael. In his eyes, Mary was a "fallen" woman.
