Chapter 806 Matthew Was Beaten

Mary furrowed her brow and asked, "How'd he get hurt?"

Michael's tone was just as serious when he replied, "A bunch of folks came outta nowhere today and surrounded Mr. Montagu's car. He wasn't ready for it and got clocked on the head. He's at the hospital now, and the troublemakers got nabbed. Turns out, they were just regular people. They owned up to it, so they won't face any big charges. But Mr. Montagu needed stitches and insists on coming to work. I'm worried about his health. Mrs. Montagu, could you come over? He listens to you."

A group of people suddenly attacked Matthew?

Mary knew Matthew was tough. Who could've possibly taken him down?

Unless he wasn't expecting it.

"Alright, I'll head over now."

Mary pushed aside the uneasy feeling in her gut and agreed right away.

She thought, at this crucial moment, Matthew can't get into any more trouble, or what would happen to their divorce plans?

When she arrived at the Montagu Group, she noticed extra security guards at the entrance. People were rushing in and out, like they were scared someone might suddenly attack them, too.

Michael was waiting for her in the lobby. Seeing her, he quickly approached, "Mrs. Montagu, this way, please."

He pressed the button for the private elevator and said, "Thanks for coming. Please try to convince Mr. Montagu to go home and rest. He'll definitely listen to you."

Mary's expression was cool as she replied, "I might not have that much pull."

Michael insisted, "You're wrong. Your words mean a lot to Mr. Montagu. He remembers everything you've said. Even though he's done things that hurt you in the past, he had no choice. Mrs. Montagu, you've seen what Mr. Montagu has been through. Personally, I hope you two can patch things up."

Michael's words were heartfelt, mainly because if Matthew and Mary got back together, his year-end bonus would be pretty sweet.

Mary glanced at him and said lightly, "Didn't know you were such a smooth talker."

Michael smiled politely, "As Mr. Montagu's assistant, I often have to attend various meetings on his behalf. It's a necessary skill."

Mary nodded, "Not bad."

Michael looked at her, trying to figure out what she was thinking.

Was she considering his words, or just complimenting him?

Mary's expression was too calm to give anything away.

Luckily, the elevator soon reached the executive office. As the doors opened, Michael and Mary stepped out.

Loud noises came from the office. Michael quickly looked at Mary and whispered, "Mrs. Montagu, Mr. Montagu's really upset about what happened today. Be careful when you go in."

Mary acknowledged him and walked straight ahead.

As she opened the door, someone was just leaving—a department executive by the looks of his suit, with sweat on his forehead. He paused upon seeing her, nodded slightly, and then left.

Mary entered to find a chair knocked over, and Matthew standing with his hands on his hips in front of the large floor-to-ceiling window. His presence was icy, and his head was wrapped in a bandage.
