Chapter 666 Quarreling at the Slightest Provocation

Matthew casually turned and left the master bedroom, hands in his pockets, as if he hadn't just done what he did.

Shirley stomped her foot in frustration. "You jerk! How dare you!"

Mary sighed, "You should get some rest."

Shirley, at a loss for words, could only nod in agreement.

Lying in bed, Mary pondered how to navigate the days ahead.

Leave Maple Grove Manor or go somewhere else?

But knowing Matthew, he'd just follow her again.

And judging by his demeanor, he wasn't seeking forgiveness.

He was just being stubborn.

Mary turned over, unable to sleep.

The next morning.

Mary emerged from her bedroom with dark circles under her eyes. Shirley's heart ached at the sight.

"Mary, did you not sleep well last night?"

Mary nodded, "Barely slept. Insomnia."

At that moment, Matthew walked out of the guest room. He was dressed in a T-shirt and pants, his muscular arms exposed. His short hair was unkempt, with bangs naturally falling over his forehead. His sharp features were softened, giving him a more approachable look.

"Need a bedtime story? I have plenty of time now. If you want, I can tell you one tonight."

A faint, almost teasing smile played on his lips as he looked at Mary.

Mary walked past him without a word, muttering, "Disgusting."

Shirley followed suit, "Absolutely revolting!"

Matthew's expression remained unchanged as he trailed behind Mary and Shirley into the dining room.

The maid had already prepared breakfast.

"Good morning, Ms. Smith, Ms. Hill," the maid greeted them politely. Then she noticed Matthew and hesitated, "And this is?"

Matthew pointed to Mary, "I'm her husband."

The maid was taken aback.

Shirley frowned, "Just ignore him and act like he's not even here."

Matthew scoffed, "Not everyone is as rude and uncivilized as you."

Shirley retorted, "My manners are reserved for those who deserve them. You don't deserve it."

The two immediately started bickering.

Mary, feeling a headache coming on, addressed the maid, "He is Mr. Montagu."

The maid nodded, "Mr. Montagu."

Matthew shot a triumphant look at Shirley before sitting down to dine.

Since Mary had mostly recovered and no longer needed a caregiver, she had sent the caregiver away. But the maid was still needed to cook.

After breakfast, Mary began her physical therapy for the day.

Her leg still couldn't bear much weight. It had only been a little over a month, and her recovery was slow.

Shirley watched Mary anxiously, ready to support her at any moment.

Meanwhile, Matthew lounged on the sofa, engrossed in a book.

Shirley glared at him several times, her expression grim.

Mary glanced at her and said, "You know, you could just ignore him like I do."

Shirley replied, "He's so hard to ignore. How do you do it?"

Mary shrugged, "You get used to it over time."

Shirley nodded seriously, "Alright, I'll try."

Just then, Matthew spoke up, "You're not doing it right."

He stood and walked over to Mary, adjusting her posture.

Mary frowned, "What are you doing? Let go!"

Matthew responded, "Your form is wrong, and you're using the wrong muscles. If you keep this up, you'll hurt your bones again."

His expression was serious, his gaze calm, with no ulterior motives.

Mary tried the new posture he suggested. It was indeed less strenuous, and the pain she felt before was gone.

She glanced at Matthew.

Their eyes met briefly, both maintaining their usual calm demeanor, before looking away.

Matthew returned to the sofa and resumed reading.

It was then that Mary noticed he was reading a book on physical therapy.

She pressed her lips together, refocused, and continued her exercises.
