Chapter 272 Don't Engage in Wishful Thinking

Mary furrowed her brows. "What do you mean?"

Matthew looked at her intently. "Stay here, and I'll protect you."

Mary's lips tightened into a line. She didn't want to stay, but he was right. She couldn't ensure her own safety.

Staying with Matthew might be the best option, though she resisted the idea. She thought her entanglement with Matthew was ending, but now...

A thought flashed through her mind, and she looked at Matthew. Seeing her hand had stopped bleeding, he released his grip. "What's up?" he asked, noticing her gaze.

Mary hesitated but asked, "Matthew, did you arrange for those people to kidnap me?"

Matthew's expression darkened. He stood up, looking down at her. "Do you think I'd kidnap you just to make you stay and then play the hero?"

Mary wondered, 'Isn't that the case?' but held back from saying it.

Matthew let out a cold laugh, leaned down, and pinched her chin, studying her pale face. "Mary, you're not worth me giving up a multi-billion dollar project just to set up a scheme." He turned and left, radiating coldness.

Mary exhaled heavily, her face even paler. Matthew thought, 'What was she saying? She really thinks I'd go to such lengths just to make her stay. She dares to think that.' But his own words stung him slightly.

She closed her eyes, trying to ignore the strange emotions.

Matthew, still cold, walked to the elevator. As the doors opened, Michael and Sam stepped out. They met face to face.

Michael asked, "Mr. Montagu, how is Ms. Smith?"

Matthew replied coldly, "Can't you see for yourself?"

Michael fell silent, thinking, 'What's going on? Wasn't Matthew worried sick just a moment ago? Why is he so angry now?' He looked at Sam, who seemed oblivious to Matthew's mood.

Michael pulled Sam aside and watched Matthew enter the elevator. "What on earth happened?" he muttered, heading to Mary's ward.

He pushed open the door and saw Mary getting out of bed. "Ms. Smith, you're awake?" he said with a smile.

Mary nodded, frowning when she saw Sam with him. Michael said, "This was really dangerous. Fortunately, Mr. Montagu had Sam protecting you in the shadows, or you would've been in real trouble."

Mary was stunned. Matthew sent Sam to protect her? Wasn't he afraid Sam would kill her? She hadn't forgotten how Sam forced her to kneel to Laura last time.

Sam looked hesitant, avoiding Mary's eyes, standing aside like a child who had done something wrong. Michael noticed the tension and changed the topic. "Ms. Smith, I'll take you home. Don't worry, Mr. Montagu will find out who was behind this and give you an explanation."

Mary nodded slightly, feeling a mix of emotions.
