Chapter 423 Don't You Feel Embarrassed?
In the hospital room, Matthew walked in and saw Laura lying on the bed, looking pale as a ghost.
Richard and Linda were sitting next to her, chatting about something.
When Linda noticed Matthew, she said, "Matthew, you're here."
Laura's eyes lit up when she saw him, hoping to catch a glimpse of concern on his face.
But there was none.
Matthew's expression was ice-cold.
He dragged a chair over, sat down, crossed his long legs, and asked, "Where is it?"
Laura's face was even paler. "Matthew, don't you care about me at all?"
Matthew repeated, "Where is it?"
His tone was even colder.
Laura could hear the impatience in his voice and knew if she didn't hand it over soon, he'd lose his temper.
"I've already had someone bring it over," Laura said weakly.
Richard snapped, "Laura is hurt this badly, and you don't even have a word of concern?"
Matthew chuckled. "Aren't you all embarrassed?"
Laura's face turned even paler.
Richard was so mad he could've strangled him. But remembering this was his only son, he held back.
Linda said softly, "No matter what, Laura has saved you twice. If you don't give an explanation, this doesn't make sense."
Laura quickly interjected, "Please don't say that. I did it voluntarily. I don't want to force Matthew. Since Matthew has fallen for Mary, I won't interfere."
Matthew said, "Did you hear that? She doesn't have that intention. You, as elders, always pushing me to divorce, isn't that unethical?"
The room got super tense.
Richard got up and stormed out, afraid he'd lose it if he stayed any longer.
Linda sighed. "Matthew, you're too harsh. If Samuel comes back, what will you do in the Montagu family?"
Matthew demanded, "You think he won't come back either, right?"
Linda paused. "What nonsense are you talking about? Of course, I hope he can come back, so your father can be at ease."
After that, she gave Laura a few more words of advice before leaving.
Now it was just Matthew and Laura in the room.
Laura's fingers clutched the bed sheet so hard they turned white. "Is Mary okay?"
Matthew said indifferently, "You took the knife for her, of course she's fine."
Laura fell silent, her eyes reflecting a sense of unfamiliarity, as if she no longer recognized the Matthew standing before her.
He had always been cold, but he was still gentle with her, especially after she saved him. Sometimes, he could even be described as tender.
How had things changed so drastically?
Matthew had no intention of chatting with Laura. He stayed only because of what she had mentioned.
Unwilling to give up, Laura still asked, "Did I do something wrong? Why are you so cold to me? It wasn't like this before."
Matthew looked up, staring at her coldly. "Why is it like this? Don't you know in your heart?"
Laura stiffened, pulling at her lips. "I don't know what you're talking about."
What did he mean?
Could he have found out something?
That was impossible!
Everyone involved in that matter back then was no longer around. He couldn't possibly find out about those things!
Laura frantically reminded herself to stay calm, her gaze at Matthew still tinged with faint sadness.
"If Samuel were really still alive, he definitely wouldn't want you to treat me like this." She choked up and started to cry.
