Chapter 216 Give Me Three Million Dollars

Mary smiled and said, "You've changed a lot too. If you hadn't called me, I wouldn't have recognized you."

They grew up together in an orphanage and were close as kids, but eventually drifted apart.

Mary went to college and lost touch with David and the others from the orphanage.

David asked, "Are you back to see us?"

"Yeah," Mary agreed.

She had planned to take her time before coming back, but that wasn't possible now.

David's eyes lit up. "That's great, Mary. Ms. Inome will be so happy to see you. She's been talking about you all these years."

Mary smiled. "I'm going to buy some things. Want to come with me?"

"Sure." David nodded.

Later, Mary found out David had just graduated and was job hunting. He planned back to Lindenville to find a stable job and help out at the orphanage.

Mary just smiled and listened, her eyes showing a hint of emotion.

Mary bought what she needed and loaded it into the car. "Let's go back," she said.

David opened the car door and sighed. "You know, out of all of us from the orphanage, you're doing the best. You left Lindenville and went to a big city like Lindwood. Where are you working now?"

Mary said, "I'm not working right now."

She had quit her job, so she was unemployed.

David paused and smiled. "It's okay. There are plenty of jobs out there. You'll find something."

"Yeah," Mary said, following the familiar route back to the orphanage.

The orphanage looked the same: a three-story building with high walls and a tightly closed gate. Laughter and cheerful voices came from inside.

David got out to open the gate and called out, "Ms. Inome, look who's back!"

Hurried footsteps approached, and a surprised voice exclaimed, "Is it Rebecca? I knew it had to be her. I always favored Rebecca. She married a rich man and promised to come back and repay me. I knew she wouldn't forget me!"

But when Barbara reached the gate and saw it wasn't Rebecca Thompson, she was stunned.

"Who is it?"

Mary opened the trunk and started unloading. "Ms. Inome, it's me, Mary."

Barbara, with her graying hair, squinted at Mary. The joy on her face vanished, and she said coldly, "Why are you back? Didn't you say you'd never come back?"

David quickly tugged on Barbara's arm. "Ms. Inome, Mary came back because she was thinking of you. Don't say that. Let her in."

Barbara snorted, said nothing, and turned to go inside.

David awkwardly came over to help with the items. "Mary, you know Ms. Inome's temper. Don't take it to heart."

"I know," Mary smiled, her eyes showing indifference.

She had expected this, which was why she hadn't come back immediately.

Mary pushed her thoughts aside and followed David into the orphanage.

Barbara had already gone into a room. David led Mary inside and said with a smile, "Ms. Inome, don't you think Mary has changed a lot over the years? I almost didn't recognize her."

Barbara sat on a wooden stool, gave Mary a cold look, and asked, "How much money have you earned? How much are you planning to give me? I heard Lindwood City is a very wealthy place. You must have made millions. Give me three million, and we'll call it even for raising you!"
