Chapter 298 You Want Me to Feel Guilty
Mary was like, "How do I even say this? Laura lost her leg 'cause of Matthew, so he should totally be responsible for her. But I just feel uncomfortable."
She felt super awkward, watching Laura cry and clutch her prosthetic leg. Something about it just didn't sit right with her.
Mary couldn't shake the feeling that Laura was playing some kind of game. She lowered her eyes, feeling a bit guilty for even thinking that way. Laura had lost a leg, and here she was, doubting her.
Taking a deep breath, Mary tried to steady her emotions and headed straight into her room. 'Forget it. It's late, I need to crash. Matthew's probably not coming back tonight anyway,' she thought, shutting the door behind her.
Meanwhile, downstairs, Matthew was helping Laura into the room. He got her settled on the couch and took her prosthetic leg to put it back on for her.
Laura tried to refuse, "Matthew, no, I can do it myself."
Matthew, staying calm, said, "If you want me to feel guilty, you gotta let me see your wound."
Laura froze, stunned. "What are you even saying?"
Matthew looked her in the eye. "Isn't this what you wanted?"
Laura raised her hand to slap him but stopped mid-air. "Matthew, is this really what you think of me?"
Her voice started to shake, and her heart sank.
She knew Matthew was cold, even when they were about to get married, he never really showed he cared.
She thought saving his life would make him feel more indebted to her. At the very least, every time he saw her prosthetic leg, he'd remember she lost it saving him.
But now, he was saying such heartless things! Even knowing she lost her leg for him, he could still be so cold! It was like she was seeing him for the first time, his gaze was so unfamiliar and icy.
While she was lost in thought, Matthew had already put her prosthetic leg back on. He stood up, looked down at her, and said, "Laura, this trick won't work forever."
With that, he turned and left.
"Matthew, you're a bastard!" Laura's emotions exploded, and she threw a pillow at him!
Matthew didn't even dodge, letting the pillow hit his back. He didn't look back and just walked out.
Laura sat on the couch, shaking with anger. She cursed under her breath, 'Damn it! So damn it! I've sacrificed so much, and I can't even get a shred of his guilt! What kind of monster is he? Such a huge favor, and he's indifferent! He's truly terrifying!'
She pulled out her phone and dialed a number, explaining the situation. The person on the other end was silent.
"What do I do now? His heart can't be swayed by favors anymore. I'm lost," Laura said, utterly confused.
The person on the other end finally spoke, "Then start with Mary. He's different with Mary."
Laura gripped the phone tightly. "Really? Does he really care about Mary?"
The other person laughed, "Can't you tell if he cares or not?"
Laura wasn't sure and thought, 'What if Matthew's just acting with Mary too? Then he'd be even more terrifying!'
The person on the other end said slowly, "Try it and you'll know. Don't forget how he died."
Laura instantly calmed down, hatred flashing in her eyes. "I won't forget. I'll make sure to seek retribution for him!!"
