Chapter 217 Identity

Mary looked down, staying silent.

She wanted to give Barbara money, but Barbara's reaction made her give up the idea.

Maybe Barbara genuinely cared for the kids when she started the orphanage. Mary had felt some warmth back then.

But now, with interests tangled up, nothing was pure anymore.

Mary pulled out a chair and sat down.

Barbara looked annoyed.

David quickly said, "Ms. Inome, Mary doesn't have a job right now. How could she have that much money?"

Barbara sneered. "You've been in Lindwood City for years and don't even have a job? Mary, do you regret not listening to me? If you had, you'd be a rich man's wife now.!"

David glanced at Mary awkwardly and changed the subject. "Ms. Inome, what about the other kids? Are they all in school?"

Barbara responded coldly, "Have you found a job? The orphanage is overspent this month. Bring some money back."

David felt even more embarrassed.

"Ms. Inome," Mary spoke up, "I came back to ask you something."

Barbara frowned. "What is it?"

Mary asked calmly, "When I was little, was there anything on me that could prove my identity?"

Barbara replied, "No, why are you asking?"

Mary looked at her indifferently, "Think carefully, are you sure there's nothing?"

"I said no. Do you think I'd lie to you?"

Barbara slapped the table, stood up, and said, "Why come back if you've left? Seeing you annoys me!"

She left the room, making it clear Mary wasn't welcome.

David awkwardly said, "Mary, don't mind her. Ms. Inome has always been like this..."

He wanted to explain, but it felt pointless.

"It's okay," Mary smiled slightly; she was used to it.

David asked, "Are you planning to find your biological parents?"

Mary nodded. "I want to try. Maybe I wasn't abandoned."

David said, "I've been searching for my biological parents without success. Rebecca is the luckiest; she found her wealthy biological parents."

"What are you still doing here? Get out!" Barbara shouted, opening the door and glaring at them.

Mary stood up, "Those things were for the kids, Ms. Inome. Think about what I said. If you remember anything, call me."

She wrote down her number and left.

David said, "I'll walk her out."

Barbara watched them coldly. After they left, she closed the door, took out her phone, and dialed a number.

"Hello? Ms. Inome."

Barbara, feeling nervous, said, "Rebecca, Mary is back. She asked if there was anything to prove her identity. She wants to find her biological parents. What should we do?"
