Chapter 808 Have I Tempted You?

Matthew leaned back in his chair, trying to sound casual. "I know you still gotta check out those blueprints. I've got a laptop here, so you can keep working if you want."

Mary frowned, clearly not thrilled about the idea.

Matthew softened his tone, "Mary, stick around, okay? We're about to split up, and after that, you probably wouldn't do me a favor like this. Just think of it as one last marital duty, huh?"

His voice was gentle, his eyes sincere, hoping she'd stay.

Mary felt a tug at her heart.

Almost against her better judgment, she nodded.

"Alright."

Matthew's face lit up, and he headed to the door to call Michael in.

"Mr. Montagu, what can I do for you?"

Michael noticed Matthew's relaxed demeanor and felt he'd made the right call.

Matthew pulled out his phone, "I need you to go out and grab some stuff for me, as per my instructions."

Michael asked, "Like what?"

Matthew gave him a look, "You don't get it?"

Michael quickly nodded, "Got it."

Matthew sent him a list of messages, and as Michael read them, he couldn't help but smirk.

Was Matthew trying to cheer Mary up like a kid?

What even was a rubber chicken?

"Get moving!"

Seeing Michael still standing there, Matthew frowned and nudged him lightly.

Michael hurried out the door.

As he left, Mary glanced over, curious.

Matthew grinned, "Just sent him on a little errand. He'll be back soon."

"Okay."

Mary shrugged it off.

She asked, "Where's the laptop?"

Matthew went to the lounge and brought out a laptop for her.

"Thanks."

Mary took it, opened it up, downloaded the software she needed, and logged into her account to access her blueprints.

The coffee table was a bit low, so she settled in the space between the table and the couch, shedding her coat and scarf. Her red knitted dress contrasted beautifully with her smooth skin and long hair, giving off a gentle and elegant vibe.

Matthew watched her, his gaze deepening.

Forty minutes later.

A soft knock came at the office door.

Matthew opened it to find Michael with bags in hand.

Matthew whispered, "Keep it down."

He started arranging the items on the coffee table, right next to Mary.

Mary's focus shifted from the computer, noticing the assortment of small cakes, spicy snacks, chips, wafer rolls, ice cream, fruit tea, little toys, and even a rubber chicken.

"What's all this?"

She looked up at him, puzzled.

Matthew placed the last dessert down and said, "I figured I might not be enough to keep you here, so I thought I'd sweeten the deal with some treats."

He picked up a small cake and offered it to her, "Did it work?"

Mary was momentarily speechless.

She hesitated, her fingers curling slightly.

Her gaze landed on the small cake.

It was a durian mille crepe, one of her favorites.

She took it and said lightly, "Barely."

Matthew's smile widened, and he left her to her work, returning to his tasks.

But every time he glanced up from his documents, the cold words faded away, replaced by her gentle and elegant face, filling his heart with a warm, sweet feeling.
