Chapter 74 Being Targeted

Mary walked for nearly an hour before she could grab a cab. After giving the driver the address, she stared outside.

The night was deep, without a single soul in sight on the road.

The driver glanced at her and suddenly asked, "Madam, why are you walking alone on the street so late at night? It's not safe."

Mary's thoughts returned, and she glanced at the driver. He wore a hat and a mask, only revealing his eyes, which inexplicably made her feel uneasy.

"I had a fight with my husband, but he'll catch up soon," Mary said with a smile.

The driver replied, "Why did you run out after a fight? It's dangerous to encounter bad guys at this time."

Mary smiled, "You're a good person. I'll be more careful next time."

The driver smiled back and didn't say anything more.

Mary remained vigilant until the car returned to the residential area. The driver asked, "Which building do you live in? I can drive you there directly, so you don't have to walk."

"It's fine, thank you. You can drop me off right here." Mary replied.

But the driver insisted, "It's no trouble. Let me take you a bit further."

Mary's eyes showed a hint of caution. Just then, her phone rang, and she immediately answered, "Hello? Okay, I've arrived. Come down to pick me up."

With that, she opened the car door and got out.

Seeing this, the driver didn't say much and drove off directly.

Once she made sure the driver had left, Mary breathed a sigh of relief. "Shirley, everything's fine."

While talking to the driver, Mary had texted Shirley.

Shirley responded, "It's late at night. Why are you coming back alone? Where's that douchebag?"

Mary walked inside, "You've already called him a douchebag. How could he possibly have brought me back?"

Shirley muttered, "Forget it. I'll come over to keep you company."

"I'm fine," Mary said. "We're getting a divorce tomorrow morning. After we file the divorce application, I'll call you, and we can go see the new house then."

Shirley fell silent for a moment, then said, "I thought that after going to Emerald Isle City, the relationship between you two might improve."

Mary chuckled silently and had already reached the entrance of her apartment building. "Alright. I'm going to hang up now."

"Okay, call me if you need anything."

"Sure."

After ending the call, Mary entered the elevator.

However, just as the elevator doors were about to close, a hand suddenly reached in, triggering the sensor to reopen the doors.

In this quiet night, with no one else in the hallway, the sudden appearance of a person startled Mary.

It was a man wearing a hat and a mask. His head was bowed, making it hard to see his face clearly.

Mary's heart suddenly raced!

The driver from earlier had the same attire!

Instead of immediately pressing a floor button, Mary pretended to fiddle with her phone.

The man waited for a moment, then reached out to press the button for the 10th floor. Mary glanced at it and then pressed the button for the 18th floor.

Her apartment was on the 21st floor.

As the elevator doors slowly closed, the man suddenly  canceled the 10th floor and pressed the 17th floor instead.

Mary's lips tightened as she held her phone, preparing to dial the emergency number.

In this situation, she hoped that calling the police would work.

Soon, they reached the 17th floor.

The man stepped out, but just as the elevator doors were about to close, he turned to Mary.

That look sent shivers down Mary's spine!

His eyes were filled with malice, coldness, and a sense of danger, making Mary feel as if a venomous snake was targeting her!

As the elevator doors shut completely, cutting off the man's gaze, Mary's face was filled with fear!
