Chapter 168 Wouldn't This the Perfect Chance to Cut Ties With Me?

Mary's eyes went cold. "Got any proof?"

Laura snapped back, "He got sick after eating your food. What more do you need?"

Mary shot back, "He bought the food himself. So, did he poison himself to frame me?"

"You!" Laura's face darkened. "Ms. Smith, you're twisting the facts!"

Mary replied, "Better than your cherry-picking."

The tension between them was palpable.

"Enough!" Matthew finally spoke, looking stern. "Mary, don't you get why I want a divorce? I don't want to be harsh. Sign the papers, or..."

"Or what?" Mary stared at him, remembering the man she once loved. "Gonna kill me?"

Her light tone unsettled Matthew. Wasn't she the one who wanted the divorce? Why bring this up now?

Matthew's tone grew serious. "What's wrong with the terms? Speak up."

Mary's fingers clenched, but she stayed calm. "I won't divorce until this is resolved."

Matthew frowned.

Laura jumped in, "Matthew, if she's so stubborn, let's go legal."

Mary added, "I've reported this to the police. When the truth comes out, you'll regret it."

Laura hesitated, eyes flashing.

Matthew told Laura, "You should go."

"But..." Laura was worried.

"It's okay," Matthew reassured her, his gaze lingering until Laura left.

Mary wanted to slap him. Was he really so attached to Laura? Did he like her that much? What did Mary mean to him?

Mary sat down, staring at him.

Matthew's face darkened. "What are you looking at?"

Mary replied, "The jerk I used to like."

Matthew's face grew even darker. After a moment, he said, "I got sick from your food. That's a fact."

"I didn't poison you. That's also a fact," Mary shot back.

"Where's the proof?" Matthew asked.

"The police are on it," Mary replied.

Matthew stared at her. "Mary, I believe you this time. Sign the papers, and we'll divorce."

Mary chuckled coldly. "No."

Matthew was on edge. He mused, 'What was Mary thinking? Wasn't this the perfect chance to cut ties with me? Why wouldn't she sign? Why refuse the divorce now? She called me a jerk, so why stay?'

Mary looked at his unreadable eyes, trying to figure him out. She stared at his face, then suddenly leaned closer.

Matthew frowned. "What are you doing?"

A bitter smile flashed in Mary's eyes. "What? Can't I be close to my husband?"
