Chapter 398 Matthew sent his men to capture Shirley.
Mary was caught off guard and instinctively glanced at him.
The car's dim light made it hard to see his face clearly, shrouding his expression in darkness.
She opened her mouth but felt lost. "I don't know either."
Being an orphan, she had never seen how parents interacted, so she had no clue what a good husband and father should be like.
But Matthew's family was whole. How could he not know?
Mary wanted to ask, but given their current situation, it didn't seem necessary.
Matthew spoke in a low voice, "If that's the case, let's just live like this. Why ask for so much?"
Mary stayed silent.
The atmosphere in the car was heavy.
Just then, her phone rang. She pulled it out and saw it was Shirley calling.
"Hello, Shirley." Mary thought she had packed up and was ready to leave.
But Shirley's voice was frantic, "Mary, Matthew sent his men to take me away! I...!"
Before she could finish, there was a burst of noise, followed by a scream, and then the line went dead.
"Hello?" Mary's face turned serious, but the call had already disconnected.
She suddenly turned to Matthew. "Did you send someone to take Shirley? Matthew, I've been very compliant to you, what more do you want?"
She was almost shouting, her eyes welling up with tears.
Matthew frowned. "What are you talking about?"
Mary gripped her phone tightly. "Can you let Shirley go? She poses no threat to you. I promise I won't bring up divorce again. I'll be obedient. Just let her go, okay?"
Her tone was almost pleading, and she looked at him earnestly.
Matthew looked at her, his face darkening. "I didn't capture her."
Mary thought he didn't want to release Shirley and was being untruthful, which brought tears to her eyes. "Matthew, please don't make me hate you, okay?"
Matthew stared at her intensely, the coldness around him growing. He took out his phone and called Michael, "Find out where Shirley is."
After speaking, he hung up.
He stared at Mary, his eyes full of mockery. "Even without Shirley, you can't divorce me. Capturing her would only make you resist me more. Why would I do that?"
Mary's heart trembled. "But Shirley said it was your men."
Matthew said coldly, "Don't jump to conclusions before the matter is investigated."
Mary looked at him. His stern face showed no other emotions. Could it really not be him? Then why did Shirley say it was him?
Mary was very confused at this moment. The only thing to do now was to wait for news.
The car went straight back to the Montagu Mansion.
She paced back and forth in the living room.
Michael's call came through, and Matthew answered, "Speak."
Michael said, "Mr. Montagu, our people captured Ms. Hill. Where they took her is currently unknown, and I can't reach them."
Matthew's face turned very grim. "Find them as soon as possible."
"Yes."
He then sent a message to Maria, asking her to track those people's whereabouts.
Maria was an expert in network tracking.
Mary looked at him anxiously. "Have you found Shirley?"
Matthew's thin lips pressed together, his eyes fixed on her, and he began to speak.
