Chapter 174 Ms. Smith, Why Are You Being So Vicious?
"Hello?" Mary answered the phone, sounding a bit cold.
Matthew's voice was even colder. "Where are you?"
Mary hesitated. "What is it?"
Was he calling about the divorce again? She had made it crystal clear: no divorce until everything was thoroughly investigated. Why did he keep pestering her?
Suddenly, she remembered his past behavior and started to understand.
It felt like watching someone get all worked up while she stood by, enjoying the spectacle.
"Come to the hospital now. I need to ask you something," Matthew said, then hung up abruptly, leaving no room for argument.
Mary frowned at her phone after he hung up. What was his problem? He didn't even bother to explain. Why should she go just because he said so?
She shoved her phone back into her bag, planning to ignore Matthew, as she had work to do. After confronting Alvin before leaving, he was likely steaming and might even slash her pay significantly. She needed to earn it back.
At the building's entrance, she noticed Sam standing nearby, looking neutral as he met her eyes. He spotted her right away. Mary felt a chill as if something terrifying was after her, an icy dread creeping up from her feet.
"Do you need anything?" she asked, frowning.
"Ms. Smith, Mr. Montagu wants to see you. Please come with me," Sam said as he made a gesture of invitation, , but there was an unmistakable forcefulness in his demeanor.
"I don't want to go. Tell him to make a call," Mary replied.
"It can't be discussed over the phone. Ms. Smith, I insist," Sam said, his eyes cold, making Mary uneasy.
What did Matthew want to talk about? Mary sighed and reluctantly got into Sam's car, heading to the hospital.
During the ride, Mary asked several times what was going on, but Sam stayed silent, his expression hardening with each passing moment. It felt as if she owed him a fortune!
Why wouldn't he explain and instead treat her so rudely?
At the hospital, two guards stood by the ward door. As soon as Mary entered, Sam shut the door loudly.
Startled, Mary saw Laura sitting pale-faced on the sofa. When Laura saw Mary, she started crying. "Ms. Smith, what did I do to you? Why are you treating me like this?"
Mary was confused. "What are you talking about?" she asked.
Tears streamed down Laura's cheeks, her pale face looking distressed. "If you have any grievances against me, say it. I'll stay out of your way. Why did you have me kidnapped and almost raped? I've never targeted you. Even when you came between Matthew and me, I never said a word. Why are you so vicious?"
Mary was utterly baffled. She mused, 'What? Laura was kidnapped and almost raped, and she blamed Mary? What was going on?'
"Ms. Griffin, you must be mistaken," Mary said.
"Mary." Matthew's cold, magnetic voice filled the room.
Mary paused and turned to face him.
