Chapter 17: If She Had Known that She Could Get a Big House from the Divorce
Mary's phone rang at 10 am the next day. She glanced at it and ignored it. She was taking notes of everything while Paul White, the site supervisor, was updating her on the current situation.
By noon, she finally had a moment to sit down and rest. She took out her water bottle and sipped, then her phone. There were EIGHTEEN missed calls, all of which were from Matthew .Heh! She chuckled softly, and the 19th came in when she was about to call back."Hello?"
"Mary, are you messing with me?"As soon as she answered, a voice filled with anger came through. Mary could hear Matthew's suppressed breathing. If she was in front of him right now, he might tear her apart.
Mary's tone was light, "Matthew, how does it feel to be messed around?"
Matthew had regained his memory and could speak, but still, he had been hiding it from Mary, pretending to be the same as before. If she hadn't discovered it, how long would he have kept a poker face? Was he mocking her in his heart while she was communicating with him in sign language like a fool? How could she not get back at him when he did something so terrible? That was not who she was.
Heavy breathing came from the other end of the line, and the smile on Mary's lips gradually faded, saying,"I want a 3,000 square-foot ranch-style house and ten million dollars. When paperwork is done, you will get your divorce."
With that, Mary hung up. She could now get the big house she had always dreamed of, which she and Matthew would have to work their entire lives to afford, simply by divorcing Matthew.
Mary got back to work after taking a bite of her hamburger.
In the president's office of the DK Group, Matthew laughed in anger when his call was hung up! Has Mary gone mad? How dare she to fool him like this? However, the calmer and more indifferent she was on the phone, the more upset he would feel. That was not who she was before.
At that moment, Michael knocked and walked in."Mr. Montagu, here is all the paperwork for the commercial building. During the early stage of construction, someone got injured and thefamily was unsatisfied with the compensation. They are still making scenes."
Matthew took the documents with a poker face, saying, "Did you call the police?"
Michael replied, "It didn't work. They did not damage anything but just showed up at the site every day. Reporters had noticed it, but I've managed to keep it under wraps."
"Keep negotiating if they're not satisfied with the compensation. Find their weak spot." Matthew folded the documents and flung them to Michael.
He returned to his desk and got back to work. Suddenly, he mentioned, "Where's Mary?"
Michael thought for a moment and said, "Ms. Smith clocked in at the company this morning but left shortly after. Oh, well, she's in charge of the commercial building project, so she should be there collecting data."
Matthew's eyes darkened, and he abruptly stood up and walked out.
At the construction site, Mary had eaten upher hamburger, put on her hard hat, and started walking inside.
Suddenly, a group of people came rushing from the left, looking aggressive. Someone even threw a stone directly at Mary! Her pupils contracted sharply, and she instinctively dodged, but the stonestill hit her hard hat! If she hadn't dodged, it would have hit her face!
What was wrong with these people? She turned and ran away. She couldn't stay here alone; otherwise, they would definitely make her a target to vent their anger! She kept running while shouting for help, but no one on the site came to her aid.
