Chapter 138 He Had Her Back

Matthew's eyes zeroed in on Mary the moment he walked in. Seeing the two bodyguards holding her, his face turned to stone.

"Let her go." His voice was icy, and the bodyguards immediately released her, glancing nervously at Brenda.

Brenda didn't miss a beat. "Matthew, perfect timing. This maid not only ignored me but also hit my grandson. What are you going to do about it?"

Matthew ignored Brenda and went straight to Mary, his intense eyes locked on hers. "You okay?"

Mary's heart skipped a beat. She shook her head. "I'm fine. I didn't hit him."

"I know." His words were quick and firm.

At that moment, Mary felt a wave of relief. Despite their past issues, he had her back right now.

She looked down, trying to keep her emotions in check.

Brenda's face twisted in anger, and everyone around was stunned.

Wasn't she just a maid for the Montagu family? Why was Matthew being so protective? Was there more to this?

Matthew turned his icy stare to Brenda. "Mrs. Hughes, for your own good, you should stay home more at your age. She is my wife, Mary Montagu."

Brenda's face turned sour, and the crowd gasped.

The woman was Matthew's wife?

Brenda took a deep breath. "Even if she's your wife, she hit my grandson. Are you going to ignore that? Is this how the Montagu family operates?"

Matthew's gaze shifted to Bishop, who was hiding behind Brenda, sneaking peeks at them.

Feeling Matthew's cold eyes on him, Bishop trembled.

"Did she hit you?" Matthew asked, his voice low.

Bishop was scared and almost in tears, but Matthew's cold stare kept him silent. He clutched his candy, his lips trembling.

"Kids who lie grow longer noses, and then no one will want to be their friend," Matthew said.

"No, she didn't!" Bishop blurted out.

Brenda knelt. "Bishop, don't let him fool you. Did that woman hit you or not?"

Bishop stammered, "No. I don't like her because she ignored you, so I wanted to shoot her."

Brenda's face turned awkward, and the crowd was shocked by this twist.

Linda chimed in, "It turned out to be a misunderstanding. Kids forget things and get confused. Let's move on. How about we continue with our coffee?"

Then she turned to Matthew. "Matthew, your father's waiting for you in the study upstairs. You should go."

Mary's face hardened. Earlier, Linda had not acknowledged Mary and demanded an apology. Now that things had been cleared up, she was playing peacemaker.

What if Matthew had yet to show up? Would Linda have just watched as Brenda's people dragged Mary away?

Brenda's expression softened as she started to leave with Bishop.

"Not yet." Matthew's cold voice cut through the room.

Linda's face grew serious. "Matthew, what are you doing? The Hughes family has a long-standing relationship with ours."
