Chapter 143 I Will Make It Up to You
Laura's face was pale, but she managed a weak smile. "I'll be fine. Just really tired and took a nap."
Cindy shot back, "Who naps on the floor with the gas on? Laura, don't do anything stupid, okay?"
"Okay, I get it," Laura replied.
Just then, Matthew walked in, his eyes landing on Laura's pale face. He looked tense.
"Matthew, sorry for scaring you. I'm fine, really. If you have stuff to do, go ahead," Laura said, her face showing gentle concern.
Cindy cut in, "What's he got to do? He's still chasing after that woman. Laura, you shouldn't have saved him back then. You lost a leg for him, and now you almost died!"
"Cindy, enough," Laura said, but then she started coughing hard.
Matthew stepped forward, handing her a glass of water. Laura tried to sit up but slipped, making Matthew frown.
Cindy urged, "What are you standing there for? Help her up."
"I can do it," Laura said weakly, trying again but slipping. Matthew reached out, steadying her by the shoulder.
Laura leaned against him, sipping the water.
Cindy quickly snapped a photo with her phone. "Matthew, you should divorce that woman and take care of Laura."
Matthew's voice was cold, "It's not your place to tell me what to do."
Cindy's face darkened, but she stayed quiet, intimidated by Matthew's cold stare.
After drinking, Laura's lips were moist, and her coughing stopped. "Matthew, don't blame Cindy. She's just looking out for me."
Matthew looked at her. "More water?"
Laura shook her head. "No, thanks."
"It's fine," Matthew said, setting the glass aside and starting to leave.
But Laura grabbed his sleeve, her eyes teary. "Matthew, are you going to divorce her? Is it true that you're using her as a shield for me?"
Matthew's brows furrowed. "You're weak right now. Don't overthink."
Tears streamed down Laura's face. "Matthew, you promised you'd divorce her. What's taking so long? If you've fallen for Mary, let me know. I'll let you go. Don't worry about my leg; I've gotten used to the prosthetic. I can manage."
Matthew felt a wave of frustration. When he first regained his memory, he learned Laura had saved him back then, losing a leg in the process. He felt guilty and wanted to make it up to her. But...
He placed her back on the bed, his voice cold. "Laura, I'll make it up to you. Rest well." With that, he turned and left.
"Hey, you..." Cindy tried to say something.
"Cindy, let it go," Laura stopped her.
The door closed, leaving Cindy frustrated. "What's all this? Is he really not divorcing her? What will you do?"
Laura looked out the window, the dark sky casting a shadow over her eyes. She knew she had to do something to push Matthew.
