Chapter 681 I Hurt, Everywhere Hurts
Upon hearing this, Mary sat up abruptly but quickly calmed down and said, "He's in the hospital. We should call a doctor."
Herman's tone turned colder. "But he's been calling your name, Mary. You two have been through so much together. I know you're about to get divorced, but it's not like you can't ever see each other again, right? He's hurt because of you. Shouldn't you come see him?"
Mary paused and said, "I'll be right there."
She hung up the phone, changed her clothes, grabbed her car keys, and left.
When she arrived at the hospital, the doctors were attending to Matthew.
As she approached, she heard him softly murmuring her name.
Mary's expression faltered slightly. She hesitated for a moment, then walked over and took his hand. "Matthew, I'm here," she said.
The next second, he suddenly gripped her hand back, and the murmuring stopped. His condition seemed to stabilize.
Seeing this, Herman said, "Stay with him. We'll see how he is once his fever breaks."
Mary didn't say anything. She sat down in a chair and watched the unconscious Matthew.
His brows were furrowed, his palms were burning hot, and his temperature was high.
Time ticked by, and it seemed her presence really did have an effect. Matthew's fever gradually subsided.
She tried to pull her hand away, but he held on tightly, showing no intention of letting go.
She yawned, stared at their clasped hands for a while, and finally gave up struggling.
Herman watched from the side, then quietly left the room.
The hospital room fell silent.
Mary leaned on the bed and soon fell asleep.
The next day.
Sunlight streamed into the room. Mary opened her eyes, her body stiff from maintaining the same position all night.
She frowned, and when she looked up, she met Matthew's gaze.
His eyes were wide open, and it was unclear how long he had been watching her.
"How are you feeling?" Mary asked.
Matthew stared at her intently. "It hurts," he said.
Mary pressed her lips together and withdrew her hand. She stood up and headed to the bathroom.
But her body was numb. She had to support herself on the bed for a while before she could move, slowly making her way to the bathroom.
Matthew felt a pang of emptiness in his hand and a flicker of disappointment in his eyes.
A caregiver came in and, seeing that he was awake, asked if he needed anything.
Mary soon emerged from the bathroom, having washed her face and feeling much more refreshed.
Looking at Matthew's pale face, she said, "The court hearing is today. Can you attend?"
Matthew remained silent.
They stared at each other.
After a long pause, he finally said, "Mary, you really are heartless. Can't you wait a couple of days to bring this up?"
Mary blinked. "It would be best if you could attend. If not..."
Matthew closed his eyes. "I can't. I'm in so much pain. Everywhere hurts. I might pass out."
Mary was speechless.
Matthew was starting to act up again.
She paused before continuing, "Then we'll postpone the hearing for a couple of days."
In his current state, Matthew couldn't possibly attend.
So, the court date had to be delayed.
A flicker of disappointment crossed Matthew's eyes. Even now, she hadn't changed her mind?
Did they really have to get divorced?
