Chapter 498 I Muted It

Herman was staring at his phone, debating whether to text Snowy. His fingers hovered over the screen, but he just couldn't bring himself to type anything.

Annoyed, he chucked the phone aside, grabbed a bottle of booze from the cabinet, and poured himself a drink.

The burn of the liquor slid down his throat, easing some of his frustration. He downed the whole glass in one go.

Meanwhile, Shirley felt a wave of relief as she left the apartment complex.

She frowned, trying to figure out what was up with Herman.

They'd only made love a couple of times; did he really think there was something more?

The thought made her shudder, but she knew she still needed to keep stringing him along.

She pulled out her phone and logged into one of her other social media accounts.

Snowy: [Mr. Adams, have you been busy lately? Check out my graduation gown, how does it look?]

She found a random picture online, one that didn't show her face, and sent it to him.

Herman usually replied right away, but this time, even by the time she got home, there was no response.

What was going on?

She shrugged it off, took a shower, and went to bed without a second thought.

It was the weekend.

Mary and Shirley had planned to catch a movie together.

While they were at the mall, Mary got a call from Matthew.

Matthew's voice was serious, "I found out. Where are you?"

Mary's heart skipped a beat, and she asked bluntly, "Who sent it to me?"

Matthew replied, "I'll tell you in person."

Mary said, "My phone works fine; you can just tell me now."

Matthew added, "What if your phone is being tapped? Then our conversation would be overheard."

Mary thought it was a bit much but realized he might have a point. She said, "I'm at the mall."

Matthew said, "Come to Montagu Mansion."

Before she could respond, he hung up.

Mary was left speechless.

"Mary, hurry up, the movie's starting!" Shirley grabbed her hand and pulled her upstairs.

Mary raised an eyebrow. Since Matthew didn't specify a time, she figured it wouldn't hurt to go after the movie.

She put her phone on silent and went into the theater with Shirley.

The movie lasted two hours, and when they came out from the theatre, Shirley was ready to post a scathing review online.

Mary checked her phone and saw dozens of missed calls and messages.

She laughed and said to Shirley, "I have to take care of something."

Shirley hugged her tightly, "Where are you going? You promised to stay with me!"

Mary patted her head, "It's about my safety; I have to go."

Realizing it was serious, Shirley let go, "Alright, I won't keep you from important stuff."

"Good girl." Mary turned and took the elevator downstairs.

As she stepped out of the mall and was about to hail a cab, a car horn honked nearby.

Mary looked over and saw Matthew's car.

How did he know where she was?

Mary walked over, confused.

The car window rolled down, revealing Matthew's handsome but stern face, "Mary, did you do this on purpose?"

Mary looked innocent, "Do what on purpose?"

Matthew asked, "Did you check your phone? I called a bunch. Why didn't you answer?"

Mary took out her phone, shook it at him, and said, "I had it on silent."
