Chapter 683 Still Pestering Relentlessly?
Robert instinctively wanted to chase after her, but Herman stopped him.
"Mr. Williams, didn't you see she just turned you down? Chasing after her now makes you look desperate," Herman said with a smirk.
Robert's tone was icy. "None of your business."
"How is it not?" Herman raised an eyebrow. "They're not divorced yet. She's still my buddy's wife, and with Matthew lying in a hospital bed, I can't just stand by and watch you try to seduce his wife."
He gave Robert a once-over, his voice dripping with disdain. "Besides, if it were a decent guy trying to win Mary over, I might not interfere. But you? You're stringing Joan along to secure your spot in the Williams family while cozying up to Mary. That's just low."
Robert's face darkened with anger.
Herman patted his shoulder. "Robert, I've seen some pretty shady moves in my time, but you take the cake."
With that, he turned and walked away, feeling quite pleased with himself. He couldn't wait to brag to Matthew about his little victory.
Robert clenched his hands.
Just then, his phone rang. He closed his eyes for a moment, then checked the caller ID. It was Joan.
"Robert, where are you? I miss you," Joan said.
"Just grabbing breakfast. I'll be back soon," Robert replied, sitting down in the seat Mary had just vacated and ordering the same breakfast she had.
"Okay, I'll wait for you. Hurry back," Joan said.
"Will do."
He hung up and mechanically ate his meal, as if doing so would somehow bring him closer to Mary.
Given his current status, it would mean giving up everything he had worked so hard to achieve to be with Mary. But he couldn't let go of his ambitions just yet. He still had scores to settle.
So, he would use whatever means necessary to accomplish his goals quickly. Once that was done, he could pursue Mary openly.
A determined look flashed in his eyes.
When Mary got home, she saw Shirley poking her head out of the kitchen.
"Didn't you eat?" Mary asked, puzzled.
Shirley replied, "No, I hadn't gotten up yet. Now I'm hungry, so I decided to make some breakfast. I thought you weren't coming back."
Mary took off her shoes, washed her hands, and entered the kitchen, taking the utensils from Shirley. "I came back because I had nothing else to do. Next time, let me know, and I'll bring you breakfast."
Shirley grinned. "Not telling you was the right call. Otherwise, how could I get you to cook for me? It's been ages since I had your cooking."
Mary smiled. "I'll cook lunch then. What do you want to eat?"
Shirley's eyes lit up. "Anything you make is fine by me!"
Mary had mostly recovered and could take care of herself, though she still couldn't do any strenuous activities. She had let the servant go since she no longer needed the help.
Breakfast was ready in no time. Mary said, "You dine first. I'm going to take a nap."
She hadn't slept well, having spent the night by the hospital bed. She was exhausted.
Shirley nodded. "Okay, you go rest."
