Chapter 776 Tired of It, Then Change People

Robert gripped his wine glass tightly, then let out a low chuckle. "Thanks for the advice, Mr. Montagu. I'll keep it in mind."

Matthew's narrow eyes lingered on him for a moment before someone came over to make small talk, and Robert turned and walked away.

"I'm beat."

Shirley plopped down next to Mary, sipping on a glass of juice.

Mary looked at her curiously. "What have you been up to?"

"Dancing," Shirley replied. "That jerk Herman insisted on dancing with me. I told him I couldn't dance, but he said he'd teach me. He didn't manage to teach me, and I nearly stomped his feet to pieces."

Mary couldn't help but laugh. "So, your relationship is quite stable, huh?"

Shirley nodded. "It's going okay. I haven't gotten sick of him yet."

Mary nodded. "As long as you're not sick of him, keep it going. When you do, find someone new."

"That's not something you should say."

Herman's voice came from behind them. He was holding a glass of wine, exuding an air of elegance with a lazy, mischievous smile. "Shirley and I are doing great. Don't project your failed relationship onto her."

Mary was speechless.

Shirley immediately defended her friend. "Watch how you talk to her. She's like family to me. One word from her, and I might just replace you tomorrow."

Herman narrowed his eyes. "Go ahead and try."

Shirley lifted her chin. "You think I won't?"

The tension between them was palpable.

Mary quickly interjected, "I was just joking. Don't take it seriously."

Herman looked at Mary and suddenly asked, "It seems like things have calmed down between you two. Are you not planning to get divorced anymore?"

Mary shook her head. "We're in a cooling-off period right now. Once that's over, we'll be done."

Herman was surprised to learn they were already in the cooling-off period. Thirty days would pass, and then it would be over. Thinking about Matthew's changes, all that effort, and for what? She still left. It was a mess.

Shirley said, "Let's not talk about that on such a nice day. Mary, how about we go dancing?"

Mary looked reluctant. "No way. My shoes are expensive."

Shirley rolled her eyes.

In the distance, Matthew was chatting with Ronan Adams from the Adams family.

Ronan noticed Herman standing next to a girl and asked, "Who's that young lady?"

Matthew glanced over and said, "She's from the Hill family."

Ronan paused. "Is there a Hill family in Lindwood City? Matthew, I'm old but not senile. Don't try to fool me."

Matthew smiled slightly. "I wouldn't dare."

Ronan snorted and said, "Keep an eye on Herman for me. Make sure he doesn't get involved with the wrong people. The Adams family has high standards for future daughters-in-law."

Ronan was old-fashioned, believing in marrying within one's social class. Clearly, Shirley didn't meet his standards.

Matthew replied calmly, "Mr. Adams, in today's world, people are free to love who they want. Herman has the ability to grow the Adams Group on his own. He doesn't need outside help. Besides, I'm here. Marrying for status only complicates things and can hinder future development."

Ronan gave him a look. "Don't think I don't know you're defending him. You might have had a free love, but I don't see you being particularly happy!"
