Chapter 454 She Escaped

Richard's voice was low and serious, "I didn't discipline him well before, which is why he's turned out this way. I can't let him keep going down this path. He's right, the Montagu Family only has him as an heir now. We can't afford any slip-ups. I need to find him a wife of equal status to ensure the best heir."

A flicker of disgust crossed his face. "Someone like Mary is utterly unworthy of being Matthew's wife."

Linda chimed in, "But I think Matthew really likes Mary."

Richard shot back, "Women like her are all about feelings. Once Mary finds out Matthew's cheating, she'll definitely cause a scene and divorce him. Sure, he likes her now, but if she goes too far and loses her appeal, do you think Matthew will still be into her?"

Richard knew this all too well because that was exactly how things ended with Matthew's mother and him.

Linda listened, her eyes slightly downcast, a cold glint flashing in them, but she kept her face neutral. She asked, "Should we do it tonight?"

Richard shook his head, "Tonight's Victoria's birthday party. We can't let this mess it up. We'll find another chance later. You should start looking for suitable candidates."

Linda nodded. "Got it."

Richard said, "Let's go check on the guests."

Linda agreed, "Alright."

They left the study together.

In the damp, decaying storage room, the temperature was freezing, and Mary was shivering, hugging herself for warmth.

Her phone was dead, so she couldn't call anyone.

No one was passing by outside either. Was she going to be stuck here forever?

She couldn't just sit and wait for help; she had to find a way out herself!

Mary gritted her teeth and stood up, scanning the room with a pale face. The storage room had only one door and two windows, one sealed with wooden planks, and the other blocked by a cabinet.

Mary walked over and tried to push the cabinet, finding that she could move it. She gritted her teeth and shoved the cabinet aside.

Dust flew up, and she waved her hand to clear it, then walked to the window, opened it, and looked outside.

Outside was a forest, and at the edge of the forest was a wall. She lifted her skirt and climbed out.

The night was cool, and the dim light cast dappled shadows through the trees onto her body.

Once outside, she let out a deep breath.

She didn't want to stay here another moment; she had to leave!

She carefully walked forward, looking for a way out, but after a few minutes, she suddenly heard a faint sound coming from around a corner not far away.

Mary called out cautiously, "Who's there?"

"Help me!" The cry for help grew louder, and it was clearly a man's voice.

Mary walked over, turned the corner, and saw a door. The sound was coming from there.

Mary hesitated, then turned to leave.

"Help me!" The voice called out again.

Mary paused, feeling that the voice was somewhat familiar.

She turned back to look at the door again and found it wasn't locked. She tentatively reached out and opened the door, and a staircase leading down appeared before her.

It was a basement, and the voice was coming from there.

"Help me!" The voice called out again, and Mary was sure she recognized it. The person flashed through her mind, and she knew she would recognize them once she saw them!
