Chapter 283 She Refused

Laura saw his expression and quickly asked, "What's wrong? Don't like the food? I can make something else."

"Laura."

Matthew's eyes moved from the lunchbox to her face, his look serious.

Laura's fingers tensed. "Matthew, what's up? Why so serious?"

Matthew asked, "Have you thought about what I said on the phone?"

Laura's smile faded. She looked down and said softly, "Matthew, you promised to marry me two years ago."

Her voice had a hint of hurt, like Matthew had let her down.

Matthew replied, "Two years ago, I asked casually, and you said no, remember?"

Laura froze. 'It is true.'

Back when they were dating, Matthew had casually asked about marriage over dinner. She was shocked. It felt like he didn't take marriage seriously. She got mad and didn't agree, wanting a proper proposal.

After that, he never asked again.

Then, things changed.

Matthew said, "I thought it was over when you said no. I didn't expect you to bring it up now."

Laura looked at him, sincere. "Matthew, I wasn't ready then. I didn't want to rush into marriage. But now, I want to be with you forever. I want a family with you."

Matthew said, "But Laura, I'm married now."

Laura said, "But you said you'd divorce her."

Matthew replied, "I didn't think it through. I felt I owed you for saving me, but marrying you isn't the only way to repay you. I can help you in other ways. Let's drop this."

His tone was calm, like always.

But Laura got the message.

He was being patient now, but if she pushed, he wouldn't be so nice next time.

She knew his temper well.

If she made him mad, it wouldn't end well.

Laura thought, 'Matthew really loves Mary! He won't divorce because of her! I need to act fast!'

Laura took a deep breath and smiled. "Since you put it that way, I won't push. I'll find my own love. Are we still friends?"

"Of course."

Matthew gave a faint smile.

Laura blinked and asked, "Can you hug me? To say goodbye to the past two years."

She looked at him sincerely, thinking he would agree.

But to her surprise, Matthew's tone turned colder as he said, "Laura, that's not appropriate."
