Chapter 748 It Doesn't Matter Anymore

Mary had been completely ignoring Matthew.

But then, she glanced up at him just as he wrapped up a conference call.

"What's up?"

Seeing Mary looking at him, he took his time, gazing back at her.

The coldness in his eyes had melted away, replaced by a tenderness that seemed to envelop her.

Luckily, her emotional defenses were still up.

"I'm going to see Mark."

Matthew nodded, "Go ahead."

Mary said, "You tormented his son. Don't you feel guilty when you see him?"

Matthew smirked, "You want me to let Gerald go?"

Mary replied, "I've always believed he's innocent."

Matthew's eyes darkened as he looked at her seriously, "Mary, Mark already took the money. Whether Gerald's innocent or not doesn't matter anymore."

Mary wanted to argue, but the words caught in her throat, unable to come out.

Gerald's parents had given up on him. What could she, an outsider, say?

Mark had taken the money, ensuring a comfortable old age.

As for Gerald's fate, no one cared anymore. Mary stopped looking at him and started eating breakfast.

Matthew noticed her growing indifference and said, "He's not dead, and he won't die."

Mary paused, surprised, and glanced at him.

Matthew continued, "Even though the evidence is conclusive, I agree with your perspective. We just haven't found the proof of his innocence yet."

Mary instinctively gripped her utensils tightly and asked, "Why are you telling me this now?"

Matthew gazed deeply at her, "Because I don't want you to keep misunderstanding me, fearing me, or resisting me."

Mary awkwardly averted her eyes, avoiding his gaze.

His intentions had always been clear—he didn't want a divorce.

But she couldn't get past the barrier in her heart.

Mary didn't say anything more. After finishing breakfast, she got up and headed towards Mark's barbecue stand.

Matthew paid the bill and followed her.

It wasn't far, just around the corner.

But Mary stopped at the corner, not moving forward.

Matthew walked up and asked, "Why aren't you going over?"

Mary looked at the spot with a complicated expression and said, "The barbecue place is gone."

Matthew looked over and saw that the former barbecue spot was now a Mexican restaurant.

Mark was no longer there.

Mary lowered her eyes slightly, feeling conflicted.

Matthew said, "It's normal. With that money, they don't need to work hard anymore. Their later years will be much easier."

Mary turned and walked away.

Matthew, noticing her downcast mood, said, "It was their choice. Why are you so angry?"

Mary suddenly stopped, looked at him with even colder eyes, and said, "Gerald is their child! They abandoned their child. They don't deserve to be parents!"

She had no parents and had longed for parental love.

Mary could never understand.

If they chose to have these children, why treat them this way?

Why?

Matthew saw Mary's eyes redden with emotion and reached out to hold her. "Mary, you need to understand, not all parents deserve to be parents."

Mary didn't resist or struggle, just stared at the sky with a hollow look in her eyes.

"What about my parents? What kind of people were they?"
