Chapter 56 Promises Are Just Bullshit
Mary looked over and asked in confusion, "What's this?"
Matthew replied, "You're my wife. If you dress too plainly, others might think I'm mistreating you."
He took out a pair of earrings and said to her, "Come here."
Who doesn't favor diamonds?
As Mary approached, she asked, "For me?"
"Yes," Matthew replied, noticing the sparkle in her eyes.
Mary quickened her pace a bit, reaching out her hand, "I'll do it myself."
But Matthew said, "You can't see with no mirror."
With that, he lifted her hair and leaned in to put on the earrings.
The diamond earrings were teardrop-shaped, perfectly cut, shimmering brilliantly under the lights, stunning and eye-catching!
Mary's earlobes were small and delicate, and the earrings easily went through the piercings. Matthew's fingers lingered for a moment, pinching her earlobe before picking up the other.
They were very close, and Matthew's breath seemed to spray onto Mary's skin, making her feel a bit warm and itchy.
Done with the earrings, and next was the necklace.
Matthew stayed close to Mary, not stepping back. Instead of going around her, he reached behind her neck, leaning in.
Mary felt enclosed in his embrace, completely enveloped by his presence.
Her heart was in turmoil.
Her long eyelashes fluttered as Mary tried to calm herself.
For the sake of this jewelry set, she had to endure!
After the necklace was put on, he withdrew his hand. As he straightened up, Matthew's lips lightly brushed her cheek.
Mary suddenly looked up, displeased, and said, "Matthew, you're quite scheming."
Matthew stared at her with dark eyes, "What do you mean?"
Mary sneered, "You put on jewelry for me just to kiss me."
"Got you!" She lifted her chin slightly, looking smug.
Matthew chuckled softly, then leaned down and kissed her firmly.
As he stepped back, he said, "Do I need an excuse to kiss you?"
Mary was stunned.
She couldn't believe what he was doing.
They were about to get divorced!
Didn't he cross the line?
Mary pressed her lips together, her face suddenly turning cold, "Let's go."
Matthew said, "Not without the ring."
Mary glanced at the diamond ring, a hint of bitterness flashing in her eyes, "Do you remember what you once said to me?"
Matthew's expression paused.
He didn't want to, but those memories automatically surfaced in his mind.
When they got their marriage certificate, he had promised her that he would give her a real diamond ring in the future, cut in her favorite shape, with their initials engraved inside, symbolizing his eternal love for her.
"Can you still fulfill your promise?" Mary asked softly, then looked away. "Forget the ring, it's unnecessary."
As saying that, she had already opened the door and walked out.
Matthew's previously joyful mood suddenly turned heavy with the ring in his hand. He thought, 'Is it unnecessary?'
In the car, the atmosphere was tense.
Mary looked out the window, her expression calm.
She had just lost it earlier, but now, she found it quite ridiculous.
They were getting a divorce, so why bother?
Promises are just bullshit!
She had used to take it seriously. How ironic!
