Chapter 60 Call the Police Immediately
The butler's expression darkened slightly. "Madam, if you don't cooperate, I have reason to suspect you of stealing the pearl earring, so..."
"Do you have any evidence?" Mary asked directly.
The butler replied, "You are the last person to leave the young lady's room, so you are the prime suspect."
"Do you have any evidence?" Mary repeated, a layer of coldness spreading in her beautiful eyes.
The people around turned to Mary, their gazes filled with disdain.
"Isn't that Matthew's wife?"
"She's just some girl who happened to marry the amnesiac Matthew. After figuring out who he was, she refused to divorce."
"No wonder she would steal the pearl earring. So disgusting!"
The butler's brows furrowed, "So be it. I'll take actions. Search her!"
Several servants immediately reached out to Mary.
"What are you doing?"
At that moment, a deep, magnetic voice sounded, instantly silencing the crowd's gossip.
Matthew's tall and slender figure walked over, his sharp eyes fixed on the butler's face. "What did you just say?"
"Mr. Montagu." The butler's attitude immediately became respectful and gentle.
"Well, our young lady's pearl earring went missing. I reviewed the surveillance footage, and this lady was the last one to leave the room, so..." The butler explained.
Matthew's voice turned colder, "If something is missing, shouldn't you call the police?"
The butler's face stiffened. Matthew's presence was too overpowering, and he felt the pressure.
"Mr. Montagu, we can't afford to ruin the party because of such an incident, so we didn't report it."
However, Matthew took out his phone and called the police.
The butler was stunned, "Mr. Montagu, what are you doing?"
Matthew replied, "You're welcome."
The butler fell silent.
That wasn't what he expected!
The police would arrive soon. What now?
Mary looked at the man standing in front of her. Her heart swelled with complex emotions, and she smiled briefly, but it quickly faded.
Perhaps he stood up to defend her because she was identified as his wife here?
His dignity still mattered.
If he truly cared for her, how could he have remained indifferent during the previous birthday cruise when she was targeted?
She reminded herself inwardly, 'Mary, wake up! He was a cold-hearted person. You should have realized this long ago.'
The police arrived quickly, and the scene was quiet. Evidence was collected, searches were conducted, and the procedures were carried out methodically.
Soon, the police came out of Jessica's room and said, "The earrings have been found."
The butler was stunned and quickly asked, "Officer, where were the earrings found?"
The police replied, "Inside a dress. Since these earrings are so priceless, they should have been properly kept. Accusing others when it was gone missing due to careless handling, isn't that unfair to the innocent party?"
Being reprimanded, the butler could only nod repeatedly, "Yes, I understand."
With the items found, the police left, leaving the banquet hall as quiet as before.
The butler wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and said, "It was a misunderstanding. Apologies for disrupting."
Finishing his words, he turned to leave.
"Stop." Behind him, Matthew's calm and indifferent voice sounded.
The butler froze and turned to him, "Mr. Montagu, anything else?"
Matthew stared at him coldly, "Apologize to my wife!"
