Chapter 359 What Did You Say?
Who would've thought, right after she finished talking, Matthew just snapped, grabbed her by the neck, and shoved her down onto the seat. His eyes were all dark and intense. "What did you just say?"
Mary was totally caught off guard. "What's your deal?"
She was shaking like a leaf!
Matthew let her go, hit a button, and once the partition was up, he barked, "Stop the car!"
The driver pulled over in a flash.
Matthew didn't even glance at her. "Get out!"
Mary, all confused, stared at his cold, stern face. "Matthew, what's your problem?"
The air around Matthew got even icier. "Don't make me throw you out!"
Mary's heart skipped a beat. She knew he wasn't bluffing, so she opened the door and got out.
The door slammed shut, and the car sped off.
The autumn wind hit her, and she felt a chill right down to her bones.
'What the heck is his problem? Why won't he help me? What did Gerald even steal? If they know he stole something, why not just take him to the cops? Why keep him at Montagu Manor?' Mary's mind was a whirlwind of questions.
But weirdly, what bugged her most was Matthew's state. What was up with him?
In the car, Matthew was fuming, thinking about Samuel. 'Matthew, come here, I got something cool to show you! Matthew, you dig this race car? Wanna go see a race? Don't sweat it, Dad and Aunt Linda won't find out! Matthew, Matthew.'
Samuel's voice was all hyped up, but then, in Matthew's mind, he saw Samuel's body on fire.
Back then, Matthew was just a kid.
He just stood there, watching Samuel burn; despite his agony, Samuel managed a smile. "Matthew, live well."
Matthew yanked at his tie, shouting, "Stop the car!"
The driver hit the brakes, feeling the icy vibe inside the car.
Matthew got out, standing by the roadside, letting the cool breeze calm him down a bit.
He lit up a cigarette, one after another.
"Mr. Montagu." Sam walked over.
Seeing him, Matthew's face darkened. "Didn't I tell you to protect Mary?"
Sam said, "Ms. Smith said if I found you for her, she'd forgive me, and I wouldn't have to follow her anymore."
Matthew's face got even darker. "You do whatever she says? Are you her guy or mine?"
Sam quickly said, "Of course, I'm your guy!"
Matthew said, "Go protect her. If anything happens to her, you're done!"
Sam hesitated. "Mr. Montagu."
"Get lost!" Matthew snapped.
Sam shivered and took off.
Matthew took a deep drag on his cigarette, his eyes downcast, fingers trembling a bit.
He got into the driver's seat and turned the car around.
Mary was walking along the roadside, hugging herself against the cold. It was super late, and she was heading to Montagu Mansion.
There were hardly any cars around.
She checked her ride-hailing app, but it was peak time, and the wait was gonna be forever.
