Chapter 312 Are You back Working for the Montagu Family Again?
Mary gave a quick nod, "Sure thing, Aunt Linda."
Linda flashed a warm smile, "Y'all head to the dining room first. We got another guest on the way."
Just as she finished, a servant ushered a woman inside.
Seeing Laura, Linda's smile grew wider, "Laura, what took you so long?"
Laura grinned, "Uncle Richard, Aunt Linda, Grandma Montagu, I swung by to grab some desserts and tea. The desserts are bomb, you gotta try 'em. The tea's from my grandpa's stash, brought it for Uncle Richard."
She handed the goodies to the servant, all polite-like.
Linda said, "Thanks, but I invited you for dinner, not a gift exchange. Next time, just bring yourself; your company is more than enough!"
Laura linked arms with her, "Got it."
Victoria eyed Laura, "Thought you quit? What brings you back? Other job didn't pan out? Actually, working for to our family is quite good. We treat our servants well."
Laura's smile faltered.
Linda chimed in, "Mom, this is Laura, Matthew's ex-fiancée, remember?"
Victoria's face scrunched up in confusion, "Matthew had a fiancée?"
Linda sighed, "That was two years ago, you probably forgot."
But Victoria insisted, "Nope, Matthew only has a wife, and that's Mary."
Linda was about to say more, but Laura cut in, "Aunt Linda, no need to explain. Grandma Montagu's just getting old."
Linda sighed, "If things hadn't gone south, you'd be Matthew's wife now, and Victoria wouldn't have forgotten you."
Laura glanced at Mary instinctively.
Ignoring her look, Linda said, "Alright, let's eat."
Mary stayed quiet, just standing there, looking indifferent.
Mary thought, 'How did Linda become Mrs. Montagu without some scheming? What's her game? Trying to mess things up between me and Matthew, or make me jealous of Laura?'
A hint of mockery flashed in Mary's eyes.
Just then, Matthew came down the stairs. Noticing her look, his eyes darkened, and he walked over, "What's up?"
Mary glanced at him, "Nothing, let's eat."
She started to leave, but he grabbed her wrist.
She looked at him, puzzled.
Matthew frowned, "Mary, you can tell me anything. You don't have to handle it alone."
Mary's face turned colder, staring right at him, "Everything that's happened to me is because of you. I can't handle it. Why don't we just get a divorce and end this? Then all these problems will go away."
Matthew let go of her wrist and headed straight to the dining room, his face stormy as he passed her.
Mary lowered her eyes slightly, realizing he had lied to her.
She thought, 'He said he'd consider the divorce once we got to the Montagu Mansion, but it was just an excuse! Why is it so hard to get a divorce?'
In the dining room, the seat next to Victoria was saved for Mary.
As soon as she sat down, Victoria pulled her close, then looked at Laura, "Since you're back working for the Montagus, get to work. This isn't a place for a servant like you to sit."
