Chapter 21: Don't Pick Up Men on the Road Like Wildflowers

Mary's lips tightened as neither of her calls were answered by Shirley. They had just separated a short while; why would Shirley go to the Grandview Hotel?

Recalling what Shirley had said earlier, Mary took a deep breath. Confronting Matthew was something Shirley would definitely do. Mary didn't dare overthink anymore. She rushedout for a cab, heading to the Grandview Hotel. When Mary stepped into the hotel quickly, the lobby was in disarray, with broken pieces of glass everywhere, as if it had just been robbed.

"Where's Shirley?"Mary grabbed a staff member and asked urgently.

The staff pointed her to a private room down the hallway, "She is  there."

Mary quickly walked over and pushed open the door to see Shirley being held by two bodyguards, her beautiful face full of anger.

"Let go of me!"She was still struggling.

Sitting on the sofa, Matthew looked grim, whose white shirt was stained with blood. He looked at Shirley as if she were already dead. His right sleeve was rolled up to his elbow, revealing a wound on his arm. Laura was sitting beside him, tending to his injury.

Mary's pupils contracted suddenly. She quickly walked over and pushed the two bodyguards away, saying, "Let her go!"

Everyone else looked over.

Matthew's face darkened even more when he saw Mary.

Shirley said, "Mary, why are you here?"

Mary asked, "What happened on earth?"

Shirley pursed her lips and remained silent, but her look at Matthew was like a dagger. If looks could kill, Matthew would have been cut into pieces by now. Mary took a deep breath and looked at Matthew, "Can you tell me what happened?"

Matthew's voice was cold, "You should ask her that."

"Hey, you mute, watch it!" Shirley's anger flared up immediately, "Right, you're not mute anymore, and you forgot how Mary treated you. You ungrateful wretch!"

She cursed harshly with no mercy, then turned to Mary, "I told you before, don't pick up a man off the street like stray flowers. You ignored. Now, when he has regained his memory and can talk again, he went back to inherit his family fortune, and got back with his ex-girlfriend. And you, his legal wife, look like a mistress in return."

Mary remained silent.

"Hold her down." Matthew's cold, magnetic voice rang out. The bodyguards immediately moved to press Shirley.

Mary intervened, "Don't touch her."

But Matthew was whom the bodyguards would only obey. The bodyguards held Shirley down again, this time determining to make her kneel.

Mary turned to Matthew, her eyes upon the wound on his arm. Her breath trembled as she spoke, "Matthew, whatever Shirley did are all for me. If you're angry, take it out on me."

Matthew's eyes darkened as he stared at her, "She did it; why should I take it out on you?"

Mary choked on her words, still asked, "What will it take to let her go?"

Matthew said, "Have her apologize to Laura since she tried to hurt Laura."

Shirley gritted her teeth, "No Way. Who does she think she is? She doesn't deserve my apology!"

Matthew gave a signal to the two bodyguards. The bodyguards pressed Shirley down forcefully, making her cry out in pain.

"Ms. Griffin, I'm sorry!"Mary turned to Laura and apologized.
