Chapter 51 Longing for This Embrace
"Mary, have a lie-in a little longer." A natural and affectionate voice sounded behind Mary, and Matthew's chin rubbed against the top of her head.
Mary froze.
This was the way they used to be.
When she woke up early in the mornings, Matthew would be like this: gentle and clingy, saying such things.
Mary lay still in the bed, dizzy, unable to distinguish between the past and the present.
How could she tell?
She couldn't, since no matter if it was in the past or the present, the person saying these words was still Matthew.
A sour and uncomfortable feeling welled up in Mary's chest, but she bit down on her finger and stayed still.
She still craved this embrace.
She longed for Matthew's warmth, his scent, everything about him.
She wished time could freeze at this moment, where there was no divorce, no Laura, no the Montagu family.
They were still just themselves.
When Mary woke up again, she immediately met Matthew's deep gaze.
She paused, "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Matthew's voice was deep, "What are you doing here?"
Mary looked at his face, "Don't you remember?"
Matthew raised an eyebrow, "Remember what?"
Mary sat up and calmly recounted what had happened the night before.
Matthew checked his phone and said, "You mean I dialed the wrong number and called you."
"That's right," Mary replied firmly.
But Matthew handed her the phone, "I actually called Michael."
Mary frowned and checked his phone screen, where she saw Michael's name at the top of the call log.
How is that possible?
Mary widened her eyes slightly, reaching out to take his phone to examine it carefully, but Matthew pulled it back.
"So, why are you here?"
His gaze swept over the bed.
Mary felt a breath stuck in her chest, making it hard for her to breathe or speak!
"So, you think I went crazy in the middle of the night because I missed you so much and came to find you?"
Matthew's handsome face showed some contemplation. After a moment, he nodded, "It's not entirely impossible."
"Heh, you're really full of yourself."
Mary sneered unceremoniously, then took her phone, opened the call log to show him, but found her log was empty!
"Did you mess with my phone?"
She immediately looked at him, eyes filled with disbelief!
"No," Matthew directly denied it, "Mary, it's not a big deal to admit it. We're still married. It's normal for you to come to me if you have needs."
Mary thought, 'It was definitely him who deleted the logs! Definitely!'
Clutching her phone, Mary said expressionlessly, "Fine, since you care so much, I won't come to you next time."
With that, she got out of bed to leave.
Matthew's expression darkened, and he grabbed Mary's wrist, restraining her beneath him, "Then who will you go to?"
Mary struggled a bit but couldn't break free. She lay back down, mocking him as she looked at him, "We're getting a divorce anyway; who I go to shouldn't be your concern, Mr.."
The nonchalance in Matthew's eyes slowly disappeared as he looked at her challenging gaze, a surge of anger burning in his chest.
Matthew thought, 'She said she was going to find another man. How could that be allowed?'
Matthew suddenly leaned down and kissed Mary's lips a bit aggressively.
Mary didn't dodge. She looked at him calmly, letting him kiss her.
