Chapter 185 Mary Sees Linda Again
Mary's breathing got heavier. She needed to ask Linda about the recording.
"Sure." Mary replied.
Linda asked, "Where are you? I'll pick you up."
Mary gave her location, and about 15 minutes later, a car pulled up. The window rolled down, revealing Linda's well-kept face.
"Hello, Mrs. Montagu," Mary smiled politely.
Linda said, "Get in."
Mary followed.
Linda asked, "You look pale. Not sleeping well?"
Mary replied, "Matthew's poisoning has been bugging me like crazy. I can't catch a wink."
Linda said, "I don't think you did it, but since you made the food. It's no wonder folks are giving you the side-eye. Didn't you call the police? They'll find evidence to clear you."
"Yes." Mary nodded, saying no more.
At the beauty salon, they went straight to a private room. Following the technician, they lay down on the beds.
Linda asked, "Have you visited Matthew?"
"Yes, but he's still upset about the whole poisoning thing and won't even give me the time of day," Mary said.
Linda replied, "He just needs time. Once he chills out, he'll come around. No sweat."
"Yes." Mary kept it short.
After that, Linda zipped her lips and didn't utter another peep. She didn't mention Laura's kidnapping.
Mary frowned and thought, 'How to bring it up?'
That was why she came. If she didn't ask, she was still the scapegoat for kidnapping Laura.
Mary thought for a moment and said, "Mrs. Montagu, did you hear about Laura being kidnapped last night?"
"What?" Linda sounded surprised. "Laura was kidnapped? What the hell happened? Is she okay?"
Mary said, "She's fine. Matthew's crew has been keeping her safe. But the kidnappers said I was the mastermind and had a recording of our restaurant conversation."
Linda was shocked. "How could that be? You don't think I recorded it, do you?"
Mary said, "Linda, I don't suspect you. Maybe someone planted a recording device in our dining room."
Linda said, "This is serious. I need to get to the bottom of this. It looks like we're teaming up against Laura. It's bonkers!"
Linda's tone shifted from surprise to anger, then to a chill.
She seemed genuinely wronged, not the mastermind.
Mary closed her eyes and mused, 'Is Linda really uninvolved?'
She couldn't be sure and didn't want to say much. She feared another recording incident.
Suddenly, Linda got up and said, "I need to see Laura. This is a misunderstanding, and I need to explain."
Mary wanted to get up, but Linda said, "You stay. You don't look well; rest here."
Linda smiled warmly, her gaze gentle and affectionate.
Mary paused, then lay back down. "Okay."
If Mary went, Laura would get more agitated. If Linda went, maybe Laura would calm down.
