'Why is Matthew targeting Joey?'
Mary couldn't figure it out, no matter how hard she tried.
"What's on your mind?"
Joey's voice snapped her back to reality.
Mary shook her head. "Nothing, let's get going."
"Alright." Joey replied.
As they left the restaurant, Joey's phone rang. He glanced at the screen and saw it was Rebecca calling.
"Hey, Rebecca." Joey's tone softened as he answered.
Rebecca's playful voice came through, "Joey, where are you? I'm so bored. Can I come hang out with you?"
Joey asked, "Have you eaten yet?"
Rebecca replied, "Yeah, I have."
Joey said, "I was planning to head back to the hotel."
Rebecca sounded disappointed, "You're going back to the hotel this early? Don't you ever think about having some fun? You're not getting any younger, you know. Mom and Dad are always nagging you to get married."
Joey chuckled, "It's one thing for Mom and Dad to nag me, but you too? Really?"
Rebecca giggled, "Take me out, and I won't join their nagging squad. Otherwise, I'll tell them everything about you and let them interrogate you!"
Joey immediately said, "Please don't. I'll take you out."
"Yay!"
Rebecca cheered, and Joey quickly mentioned a place where he would pick her up later.
After hanging up, Joey turned to see Mary looking at him with a hint of envy in her eyes.
His tone softened again, "Do you want to come along? My sister is about your age. You two might get along."
Mary shook her head. "No, I need to go back and rest up for tomorrow's court session."
Besides, she knew Rebecca, but they weren't exactly close. Meeting her might be awkward.
Joey didn't push it. "Alright then, drive safely."
Mary nodded and said goodbye.
As she got into her car, she watched Joey's retreating figure and felt a strange sensation.
Just now, watching Joey talk to Rebecca on the phone, a part of her felt a longing.
If only she had a brother like Joey who doted on his sister.
The thought came out of nowhere, catching Mary off guard.
She had never felt this way before.
Mary had seen plenty of happy families, but she had never had such thoughts.
What was going on with her lately?
Mary shook off the random thoughts and started her car, heading back to Maple Grove Manor.
When the elevator doors opened, the hallway was pitch black, with only the faint glow of the emergency exit sign.
What was going on?
Why were the lights out?
Mary was puzzled but didn't think much of it. She walked out, as her apartment was just a few steps away.
The elevator doors closed behind her, plunging the surroundings into darkness.
Mary reached out to touch the fingerprint lock, but the next second, she heard a faint noise behind her, and her body was pressed against the door!
A familiar scent overwhelmed her senses. Her chin was grabbed, her face turned, and hot lips descended on hers.
Mary was shocked and immediately started to struggle.
But Matthew's strength was astonishing, pinning her down so she couldn't break free!
What was Matthew trying to do? What on earth was he trying to do?
