Chapter 405 A Moment of Tension
Mary gave a nod. "Alright."
She then turned to Shirley. "Come on, let's go."
"No way."
"Don't."
Two voices chimed in at the same time.
One was Shirley's. She shot a look of disgust at Matthew. "I can't stay in the same house as him. I'd probably stab him in his sleep, and I don't want to end up in jail."
Mary went quiet.
Matthew's face hardened. "Just toss her in the basement. Let her spend the night with those folks."
Shirley was fuming.
Mary quickly said, "Let's just take you home first."
Right then, Herman's voice cut in. "I'll take her."
Shirley eyed him suspiciously. "Are you really that nice?"
Herman chuckled, a bit annoyed. "I did save you, didn't I? Isn't that nice enough?"
Shirley muttered something under her breath, but no one caught it.
Mary thought for a second and said, "I'll take her. I'll feel better knowing she's home safe."
Herman insisted, "I saved her. What are you still worried about?"
Mary pressed her lips together.
Matthew added, "You can trust Herman to handle it."
Shirley chimed in, "You've had a long day. Go home and rest. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Okay." Mary nodded.
She watched Shirley get into Herman's car before finally getting into Matthew's.
She was still worried, her eyes glued to Herman's car.
Matthew noticed and his expression turned colder. "Herman's taste isn't that bad."
Mary frowned and shot back, "Neither is Shirley's."
Matthew snorted and started the car.
The tension between them was thick during the drive.
The sky was completely dark, and everything around them was pitch black.
When they got back to the Montagu Mansion, Mary's phone rang just as she stepped out of the car.
She saw it was Herman calling, and since Herman never called her, it had to be Shirley.
"Hello?" Mary answered.
Shirley's voice came through. "Mary, I'm home. Don't worry."
Mary finally relaxed. "Alright, get some rest after today. Let me know if you need anything."
"Okay, don't worry," Shirley said and then hung up, handing the phone back to Herman.
Herman looked at her small house with a hint of disdain and offered, "Why don't you stay at my place? It's safer."
Shirley replied, "No."
Herman gritted his teeth. "So ungrateful!" With that, he turned and left.
Shirley slammed the door shut. She was exhausted and went straight to bed after a shower.
But her secondary account kept buzzing with messages, which she ignored for now.
Back at the Montagu Mansion, Mary took a shower and came out to see Matthew on the couch. He was in a silver-gray bathrobe, looking all cold and noble, focused on his computer.
She glanced at him briefly, then looked away and got into bed.
After a while, Matthew joined her. He stretched out his long arm and pulled her close.
Mary's body tensed up.
