Chapter 265 I Saw My Mother Jump Off the Building
Matthew saw the sparkle in her eyes and nodded. "Okay."
Mary jumped up. "Stories are better with booze. Otherwise, it's no fun."
Matthew watched her grab the drinks, remembering how she got when drunk, but didn't stop her.
She came back with a few beers, placing one in front of him and one for herself.
She opened one, took a sip, and closed her eyes. "That's the flavor!"
Matthew opened his can, took a sip, and his usually sharp face softened a bit.
Mary started, "I grew up in an orphanage."
She raised an eyebrow at Matthew.
He smiled. "That's it?"
Mary nodded. "Yeah."
He chuckled. "I once had amnesia."
Mary was speechless.
She wanted to know more about him but forgot he was always tight-lipped. He never gave much away.
Mary took a bite of her meat skewer. "When I started middle school, Ms. Inome stopped supporting me. I collected scrap to pay for school. At least she didn't kick me out."
Matthew paused. "When I was young, I saw my mother jump off a building."
Mary's eyelashes fluttered in surprise. "You..."
She thought, 'He saw his mom's suicide? That must have left a huge psychological scar.'
Matthew took another sip. "Your turn."
Mary bit her lip. "Compared to yours, mine's nothing. When I started high school, Ms. Inome kicked me out. I came here to work. Later, I got a college acceptance letter."
Matthew replied coolly, "Later, my eldest and second brothers died too."
Mary fell silent.
Matthew had it rough.
She clinked her bottle against his. "Cheers!"
Matthew noticed the pain in her eyes and felt something stir within him.
He suddenly asked, "You didn't know any of this?"
Mary's eyes widened. "How could I? When I met you, you had already lost your memory!"
"Yeah, true."
Matthew seemed to be talking to himself.
'She was an orphan, always working hard, no ties to those people. How could she know my past? How could she have approached me intentionally?' he thought.
Matthew's gaze softened, and he took another sip.
Mary, holding her bottle, stared at him. "Answer me seriously, do you really love Laura?"
She had always wanted to ask this.
She had seen him in love before. He didn't look like that with Laura.
Or was it just because Laura saved him, and out of gratitude, he felt he had to divorce Mary?
Matthew looked at Mary. Her eyes were a bit blurry. He said, "Does it matter?"
Does love really matter in the face of everything else?
Mary felt her mind getting fuzzy but held onto a bit of clarity. "Of course it matters. If you love her, then we... we..."
