Chapter 148 Why are you hiding? Don't you recognize me?

Herman's eyes went wide, and he stammered, "No, I mean, you..." The more he tried to explain, the more he fumbled his words.

He had just given Matthew the credit, so why was Mary calling him a good guy now? What did that make Matthew?

Herman panicked and turned to Matthew. "Matthew, she's talking nonsense."

Matthew just stared at him coolly.

Mary said, "Mr. Adams, you rest up. We won't bother you anymore."

With that, she grabbed Shirley's hand and left the room.

"Hey, don't go!" Herman was so anxious that he almost jumped out of bed.

He looked at Matthew. "Matthew, I was trying to help you. I really did my best."

Matthew said, "Well, how nice of you."

Herman felt like he might as well be dead.

"Hahaha!" Outside the room, Shirley burst into laughter. "Mary, you're so clever! Did you see Matthew's face? He looked so annoyed. How satisfying!"

Mary stayed calm. "I saw through their intentions right away. No need to play along."

Shirley looked at her with admiration. "You're not the pitiful one in Matthew's pocket anymore."

Mary paused, then forced a bitter smile. She could be rational about small things, but when it came to big events, Matthew still pulled her strings.

As long as they didn't divorce, they were stuck together.

Shirley said, "Come on, let's grab a bite. My treat."

Mary replied, "You're about to babysit someone else, and you still want to treat me?"

Shirley said, "Why bother? It is called living in the moment. Who knows what'll happen? What if Herman dies tomorrow? Then I won't have to babysit him, right?"

Mary didn't respond.

They went to a nearby restaurant for a light meal before they went back to the hospital.

Shirley told Herman she could only come tomorrow night because she needed a day off to sort out her work.

This time, Mary didn't go into the room since she didn't want to see Matthew.

The corridor lights flickered on, and she walked to the end, staring out at the night, her expression distant.

She heard steady footsteps behind her. She paused and turned to see Matthew approaching.

Mary frowned and turned to leave. But Matthew grabbed her arm and pinned her against the windowsill.

Mary's eyes turned cold. "What are you doing?"

Matthew said, "Why are you avoiding me? Don't you know me?"

Mary gave a cold smile. "I wish I didn't know you." That way, she wouldn't feel so sad and lost, living like she wasn't herself.

Matthew's eyes locked onto her lips, and he suddenly felt dissatisfied. He leaned in to kiss her.

Seeming to anticipate his move, Mary covered her mouth with a hand, and his lips landed on the back of her hand.

Mary said, "Matthew, Laura has depression. Are you still not divorcing me?"

Matthew's lips pressed against the back of her hand, not moving away, his eyes staring straight at her as he continued to kiss her hand bit by bit.
