Chapter 822 Just for This Moment?

Matthew heard the comment and stopped in his tracks.

Herman gave Anthony a thumbs-up, and they all headed to the hospital together.

By the time they got there, Matthew had a small blister on his forehead from the burn.

The doctor treated it quickly and said he was good to go.

It wasn't a big deal, but Mary insisted on coming to the hospital to make sure everything was okay.

As they left the hospital, Shirley clung to Mary's arm, hesitating to speak several times.

Mary glanced at her. "If you've got something to say, just say it."

Shirley looked at the men behind them, then pulled Mary a few steps ahead. Once she felt they were far enough, she whispered, "Mary, are you having second thoughts? Do you not want to go through with the divorce?"

Mary paused and replied, "I'm not having second thoughts."

Shirley looked worried. "But you don't seem like you're not having second thoughts. You got so worked up over Matthew getting a little burn. If someone attacked him and stabbed him a few times, wouldn't you go after them?"

Mary pressed her lips together, staying silent.

Shirley felt she was right and, seeing the men approaching, lowered her voice even more. "The date is almost here. You can't waver now, or everything you've stood for will be a joke."

As she finished speaking, the men caught up to them.

Herman raised an eyebrow. "What's so secret that I can't hear?"

Shirley glanced at him. "If you were my best friend, you could listen all you want."

Herman's expression darkened.

Matthew walked up to Mary, his eyes fixed on her. "Ready to go home?"

By now, it was dark.

The city lights were just coming on, and a cold wind was blowing. It wasn't the best place to have a conversation.

Mary looked at him. "Who was that guy?"

Matthew replied, "The investigation isn't complete yet. I'll let you know when it is."

Mary nodded and then turned to Shirley. "Can you give me a ride?"

Shirley was about to agree when Herman grabbed her. "We still have unresolved business. Matthew lives in the same building as her. Why do you need to give her a ride?"

Shirley struggled. "No, I want to give her a ride. Let go of me."

Herman pulled her into his arms, narrowing his eyes dangerously. "Shirley, you haven't explained what happened before. Don't you think it's time to clear things up?"

Shirley blinked nervously. "What are you talking about? I don't know anything!"

She reached out to Mary, looking pitiful. "Mary, help!"

Mary's mouth twitched, then she turned to Matthew. "Let's go."

Matthew's lips curved into a slight smile as he led her to the car.

Herman snorted. "See? Your friend doesn't need you."

Shirley watched Mary walk away, suddenly finding the strength to push Herman away.

"Jerk!"

She stormed off angrily.

Herman frowned. "Who are you calling a jerk? Explain yourself!"

He chased after her, demanding an explanation.

Anthony stood there, watching the two pairs walk away, and looked up at the sky, speechless.

Did he come along just for this?

In the car, Mary closed her eyes wearily, but Shirley's words kept replaying in her mind.
