Chapter 313 Everyone Stays
Victoria had this big ol' grin and wasn't trying to give Laura a hard time. She was just reminding her that, as a "servant," she shouldn't be eating with them.
But Laura's face got a bit tight.
Linda jumped in, "Mom, she's not a servant."
Richard chimed in too, "Mom, Laura's a guest in our home."
Victoria looked at Matthew. "Isn't she a servant?"
Matthew was kinda shocked Victoria was so sure Laura was just a servant and said, "She's not."
Victoria had an "aha" moment. "I thought so.. I remember she used to bring stuff whenever she came to see me. Didn't you tell her to do that?."
Linda looked at Laura, held her hand, and said, "Laura, don't mind her. Victoria's just getting old and forgetful."
Laura forced a smile. "I'm fine."
She looked down a bit, a flash of coldness in her eyes!
'That damn Victoria!' Laura cursed in her head.
Victoria smiled and said, "Since you're a guest, let's eat. I'm sorry, I didn't know you were a guest."
Laura quickly said, "Grandma Montagu, forget it. I'm still happy to stay by your side and take care of you."
Victoria then turned to Mary. "Mary, remember, she's a guest, not a servant, and she has nothing to do with Matthew. Don't get mad at Matthew because of this."
Mary had been trying to stay low-key, and she was a bit surprised when Victoria suddenly spoke to her.
"Grandma, try this chicken leg, okay?"
Mary used the communal utensils to serve Victoria some food.
"Okay, thank you."
Victoria's attention was immediately diverted.
Matthew's deep gaze fell on Mary's face.
But she was only looking at Victoria, not giving him an extra glance.
Linda said, "You all haven't been back in a long time. Stay tonight. Victoria has been talking about you."
Victoria also nodded and said, "Yes, stay. You must stay tonight."
Mary paused and glanced at Matthew, hoping he would refuse.
For them, it wasn't suitable to stay together.
But to her surprise, Matthew nodded lightly, "Okay."
Her brows immediately furrowed.
Mary thought, 'What does he mean by that? Doesn't he see the look I gave him?'
Victoria held her hand and said with a smile, "Mary, you and Matthew need to work hard so I can have a great-grandchild soon. I had the kitchen make some nourishing soup for you. Make sure you eat it before bed."
Mary smiled and nodded, "Okay, Grandma."
Victoria looked at Matthew, "You too, not a drop left."
"Okay." Matthew also nodded.
Richard's face darkened a bit, and Linda's eyes flashed as she turned to Laura and said, "Laura, stay with me tonight. We haven't had a good chat in a long time."
Laura smiled and said, "Aunt Linda, wouldn't that trouble you?"
Linda said, "Not at all. You've stayed here before. You can stay in your old room. I'll have it cleaned up."
Laura instinctively glanced at Matthew, but he was looking down, his expression calm and indifferent, as if he hadn't heard their conversation.
Linda said, "It's settled then. Let's eat first."
Laura reluctantly agreed.
The atmosphere was a bit strange.
A hint of faint mockery flashed in Mary's eyes.
She wondered, 'What does Linda mean by this?'
