Chapter 485 We Should Keep Our Distance

The streetlights flickered on, casting a soft glow on half of Matthew's face. His deep-set eyes and brows were hidden in the shadows of the car, making it tough to read his expression.

"So, got a place to crash tonight?" he asked, his voice cold.

Mary shrugged, "I can hit up Shirley's or grab a hotel. Lindwood City's huge, and I've got plenty of cash. No way I'm stuck without a place."

Matthew found something in her words amusing and let out a soft chuckle. "Maple Grove Manor's officially yours now. You can head back there tonight."

Mary's eyes widened in surprise. "So soon?"

"Yep," Matthew nodded. "I can even drive you there."

Mary shook her head. "No need."

She turned and started walking away.

Matthew called after her, "We're divorced now. Still afraid you won't be able to resist making love with me?"

Without turning back, Mary replied, "We're done. Better to keep our distance and avoid any drama. If things go south, they'll blame me, and that's just not fair."

Matthew didn't say anything else, his dark eyes following her slender figure until she got into her car.

His car window rolled up slowly, and his expression turned icy. He pulled out his phone and dialed Herman.

Herman answered sluggishly, his voice a bit rough.

Matthew sneered, "It's not even bedtime yet, isn't it a bit early to start the nightlife?"

Herman muttered a curse, "You don't have a wife now. I'm not gonna argue with you."

Matthew spoke quietly, "Think Mary could convince Shirley to listen to her?"

Herman gritted his teeth, "Matthew, remember how I helped you back then? Now you're turning on me?"

Matthew sighed, "I had no choice. I'm divorced now."

"You're ruthless!" Herman finally gave in, "What do you want?"

"Come out and drink," Matthew said.

After a long pause, Herman replied, "Wait for me."

Then, he hung up.

Matthew slipped his phone back into his pocket and stared out the window, his eyes dark and unreadable.

Mary headed to Maple Grove Manor.

She had a special attachment to this place.

It was her first big house.

Despite all the ups and downs, it was officially hers again.

Standing in the foyer, looking at the house designed to her liking, a smile spread across her face.

How wonderful.

She was a person with a big house now!

She kicked off her shoes and happily wandered around, as if trying to leave her mark on every corner.

Suddenly, her phone rang. She pulled it out and saw it was Robert.

"Robert," Mary answered.

Robert's cheerful voice came through, "You back at Maple Grove Manor?"

Mary was surprised, "How'd you know?"

Robert replied, "I'm staying nearby tonight. Saw the lights on and figured it must be you."

Mary said, "Yep, I'll be living here from now on."

Robert paused, "What do you mean? Did you get divorced?"

"Yes!" Mary admitted, her voice filled with joy. She was eager to share her happiness with someone!

"Congrats!" Robert said.

"Thanks, Robert," Mary replied.

Robert suggested, "This is awesome news! How about we go out for dinner to celebrate?"
